Software for plotting frequency response graph ?

Does anyone know of a software that can plot the frequency response of outboard gear, by generating a control signal and analyzing the returning signal ?
Free software is prefered, then freeware.

I have exotic filters with particularly unhelpful markings, and I'd like to know what they're doing. I can work with my ears up to a point, but sometimes I need to know, not just hear, what I'm doing.
