lenovo w530 i7-3740QM ... buy or not ?

I am looking for a portable audio workstation suitable for a small home studio setup.

I can get a second hand lenovo w530 i7-3740QM - 12 giga Ram for 450/500 euros.

Another option could be a second hand lenovo T460 i5-6300 u ... for 600/650 euros.

Suggestions ?

Thanks

Mf

Lenovo is one of the few commercial laptops that I would recommend. Go for the i7 if you can afford it.

I actually use a w530 for work. my only beef with it is i got the larger extended life battery and its not keeping its charge as it used to.

the pros.
- old school business laptop.
- old school sturtdy keyboard.
- very easy to open up and upgrade drives and ram

cons
- its a big hunking heavy laptop when compared to what is current modern technology. its 6lbs. compare that to 3 to 4 macbook pro and air which is < 3lbs. You really notice it after you have handled a few newer modern untrabooks.
- the dvd player burner sucks. it always sucked from day one its loud and always easily opens on its own and i hardly ever used it.

good luck. and get the i7 if you can afford it.

"U" series chips are low power / low performance.

The older (and cheaper in this instance) "QM" chip has twice the performance.

Save your money, get the better one!

In my experience (running Pro Tools) with a Lenovo W700, I found it necessary to strip the OS down to bare essentials and disable some hardware (wifi, cd rom, bluetooth etc) to get reasonable low buffer performance. The bios is limited and drivers can be sketchy.
I have done lots of remote stuff with it and it's been ok but if I had to choose again I would look elsewhere.

Lenovo ThinkPad W520 4284 - 15.6" - Core i7 2860QM - 8 GB RAM - 500 GB HDD
ExpressCard/34
4-pin FireWire
Ultrabay
4 in 1 ( SD Card, MultiMediaCard, SDHC Card, SDXC Card )
DisplayPort, VGA, and WIDI
USB 3.0
I had $2500.00 in it new, (you can get a good used one for $350.00 to $500.00 now)
I've another 2000.00 Plus, in upgrades
32GB Ram
2x1TB Samsung EVO 850 Pro
1x Plextor M5M M-Sata 128 GB
Docking Station
ExpressCard/34 to PCI Card Adapter with Motu Pci424 and a Firewire card "works great"
and the capability to use 3 x 21 inch Displays and one 70" Vizio, plus the W520 Screen at once

Ive an W530 i3 8GB (12GB Max) for surfing with none of the capabilitys of the W520, other then-
HDMI/WIDI/UltraBay/USB 3.0

I would recommend getting something with an ExpressCard Slot

I know the "W" stands for WorkStation, so The "E" is most likely for "economy.... For Sure the w530 is a Workhorse.
