Freeware LA2A ?

Hi,

I've been looking for ages for a free la2a because I am skint but couldn't find any current ones left until I eventually found the compressor in the free version of pod farm 2 is modelled on an la2a. I had low expectations but tried it out and it seems really good. I compared it to amplitubes trial of white 2A on a really uneven bass guitar and even on maximum it seems to level the bass better. It might not be quite as nice sounding on more subtle sources, I don't know, but there really isn't much in it at all to me on the bass. However as a levelling tool it seems to do a better job of bringing the bass forward and tightening it up and I know many people rate the White 2A as a decent emulation so this is great news.

Just thought I would let people know to check it out and also ask if anyone know's of any other la2a emulations for free out there please as it is a lovely characterful sound with many uses ?

Cheers

Well if you're on Windows x86 you can try Antress' Modern Lost Angel

thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately i am on Mac and reaper at the moment which is a disastrous combination for plugin compatibility and bugs ( see reaper OSX forum page sticky thread ) but am changing back to pc and hopefully cubase at end of year, so i will get to try antarres then thanks. I am sure most plugins work fine on logic as AU and cubase as VSt but both formats are riddled with bugs in reaper OSX and after speaking to some developers from which I've bought software i have been told it is not just reaper OSX that has problems as reaper provides a constant stream of automation data that can and does mess up plugins.

Regarding the VOS plugins, I've read a few reports of problems with the 32 bit thrillseekerLA in reaper and 32 bit plugs are a PITA in OSX as the GUI doesn't work efficiently, stop start transport bar every time you open them etc. Thats one of the main reason for asking the question really as pod farm 2 only works in (x86) 32 bit mode on OSX in reaper as a VST. The 64 bit AU version crashes every time as is often the case on OSX reaper for me.

I was on windows pc and cubase for a few years and never had a single free 3rd party VST crash on me, and i used loads of them. I used two different interfaces on that old system without a single driver glitch. Ive had nothing but bother on mac with my current driver supported interface, and there is no support from apple either…so much for mac's being better than pc's, that has been the opposite experience for me, so i am saving up to go back to a specialist audio pc and cubase.

cheers

Try the Klanghelm freebies. The first one, can't remember the name, little brother of DC8C is pretty LA2A in movement.

thanks man, i have klanghelm DC1A. I love his free plugins. i may be setting it up wrong but it doesn't seem to do LA2A to my ears. It does have some of the characteristics with deep and relaxed engaged but it lacks the low end distortion ( removed by developer after v1 in deep mode ) and doesn't have the low mid hump and thickness i associate with LA2A.

However, i am really looking forward to trying out his free new vari mu and am buying his VUMT soon.

cheers

No it isn't a copy including the frequency shape and harmonic behaviour, no. Just a related ballistic shape. Not sure about a freebie that is real close. But then, to me no plug I have heard yet, free or not, is particularly close to a real, old one....lol

The closest in ballistics I have heard is nebula with TimP's LA3A, running the LA2A curve. Doesn't do the tone/halo part though.

Thanks man, have you tried the free pod farm one ?. Honestly I think it's good. I've never tried an analogue la2a so I just used the white 2A to ab and others I've heard online as a reference. They all do something similar to my joe meek vc1 but more transparently and thicker I think which is very cool. I am just happy I've at least got one !

Someone mentioned VOS Thrillseeker LA. A really nice freebie that can emulate an LA2A pretty well, and also has some wicked cool Drive (saturation) and Transformer emulation features.

The limitation is that it's 32-bit only. But it is quite good.

I haven't. But to me the distance between an LA2A and a JoeMeek VC1 is about a continent....lol

The VC1 is a sausage machine and the LA is a levitation machine. Somewhat different.

No sure, I just meant the optical excitement character but I appreciate they are pretty different at least from the two plugins I've tried. an old stereo ted fletcher joe meek on parallel drums though, that is great. I can get subtlish out of my vc1 with much care except on acoustic guitars but I am moving more into plugins nowadays and the la2a sound is appealing.

Cheers
