What is the cheapest way to do 16 ins?

I'm trying to throw recommendations at a friend of mine who is a drummer and is looking to eventually have a sort of "home studio" setup in the music shop that he owns. He says he eventually wants to get pretty lavish with his drum micing setup, too.

I'm fairly certain he will not need any complex routing capabilities for outboard gear.

My assumption is that I'll have to do something like have two 8-channel i/os with ADAT or d-sub outs that go to a PCI card.

Anyone have any bright ideas?

Mackie 1640i? Don't pretend it replaces high end pres / eq / conversion but a very versatile box for the money, especially if you can find a used one. 16 I/O over FireWire.

My first interface was the Tascam US-1641.. 8 MicPres, 2 hi-z or line ins, and 4 line ins, and 2 spdifs.. That is more or less 14 ins, but you can get it quite cheap used or the new model also relatively cheap.. I used to use it to record my band in the first years.. Never let me down, in fact I still have it!
