Guitar to MIDI Solution

Basic question about converting electric guitar to a MIDI signal.

Would the following signal chain produce an output?

Fishman Triple Play (pickup attached to electric guitar) ---USB Out---> Kenton USB Interface ---MIDI Out---> Dave Smith Prophet 08 (MIDI In)

In other words, using the Kenton to convert the USB Signal from the Fishman into a standard MIDI signal to control the Dave Smith.

So controlling the Prophet with an electric guitar

If anyone can help that would be amazing, cheers

That will do what you want. There will be some latency and a bit of sloppiness, but it will work.

There are also software solutions. I tried one called 'Jam Origin' a couple of years ago, not too bad.

Jam Origin | MIDI Guitar 2

I use a YouRock Gen 2 midi guitar controller currently. I've heard good things about the Fishman Tripple-Play too. Others claim the Roland midi guitar controllers work well, but are pretty expensive.

With any solution I've tried myself, there's a certain amount of acclimation needed, and you have to alter your playing to compensate as needed. You can't blow off Joe Satriani lead solo's, or fast & advanced changes and expect any of them to follow! Simple runs and chords yes, works fairly well.

Funny thing about Jam Origin, is that while it followed what I played (within reason ok) it did not record the midi it generated nearly as well as in 'live' mode. Maybe they've improved that since I used it.
With my YouRock gen2, it records midi as well as I hear it live, no better, but no worse either. I would however like to use my regular guitar, but for now the YouRock does what I need it for well enough.

I'm not so sure, looking at the Fishman info it looks like the MIDI conversion is done in your computer, not in the guitar mounted unit or the USB receiver.

I may be wrong, but that's the impression I'm getting.

They have the FC1 footswitch which you can use to feed straight into the Prophet 08.

Yes, a couple of years late for this reply lol, but, yes this is entirely possible and exactly as you just described it. In fact, Fishman recommends the Kensington device as being one with no issues at all with this setup.

As other people have mentioned in the thread, yes, it’s also possible to get the fishman FC-1 foot pedal that will convert fishman output to MIDI.
