Steinberg UR12 Vs. M-Audio Fast Track Pro

Hi all,

I'm wanting a comparison between the Steinberg UR12 and the M-Audio Fast Track Pro. I know the basics but I want to know which is of higher quality. I have an option to buy one or the other. The I/O is fine on both but I am looking for a professional comparison of the quality of the preamps, A/D D/A conversion.

Maybe it's not possible to say one is necessarily better than the other but if is I would like to know. Thanks!

Sadly, there's no good comparisons between audio interfaces. You will get a few anecdotal answers at best.

It is a real pity.

The Fast Track Pro has gotten it's last driver update. It's an old unit. So I would stay away from it.
The steinberg unit is new and can be used with an ipad as well.
Unless you want midi on your interface, the ur12 is good.

Here's the Fast Track Pro driver download page. As you can see it won't be getting any more driver releases.

Noise levels are probably the sticking point with (budget) interfaces.

I mean, thanks for your effort, but those reviews are useless. The author of the review thinks the pre-amps sound musical. Lol. Thanks for info, dear author.

And yeaa, I'm really serious here. I'm not nitpicking. Check out the following thread. Second post is by a Linux developer. The guy developed the Focusrite Scarlett drivers .

linux-audio-user - Focusrite Scarlett 18i8

"Compared to the other two USB audio-device that I have, the [preamps of
the] Focursite 18i6 is the noisiest. Measured with a 200 Ohm
termination and jnoisemeter: ~-72dBFS (Flat, RMS) -- the Edirol UA-25 is
at -81dBFS and the Presonus 1818VSL at -84dBFS.

That make we wonder which award those 'award winning' preamps of
Focusrite actually won "

Like I said, there's no good reviews, sadly. Right now we're 100% relying on anecdotal references, like "random internet person thinks the pre-amps sound musical".
