Having trouble processing bass

I'm working on some tracks while I'm at college away from my band, and I left my guitarist a Focusrite iTrack Solo interface to record bass tracks remotely.

He just sent me some takes and I'm having trouble getting a good bass sound. It's recorded direct in at a healthy level. I'm getting alot of inconsistent twacking on the high end (sometimes it sounds springy/chorusy?). I had him play with a pick to suit this song's style, but it's sticking out too much.

I've run the through bass models in Guitar Rig and Amplitube and tried some EQ moves and compression to try and smooth it out, but everything I've done sounds inconsistent.

He's also not used to playing bass regularly...playing technique could be an issue here, too.

I left the other instruments in the background softly so you can kinda make out what's going on. Here's a clip of the dry track.

Any helpful tips or thoughts from the more bass-minded?
