I don't like Echoboy

I was excited when Soundtoys announced that an iLok wasn't required for v5 so I could finally buy Echoboy, since everybody's always raving about it.
Even though it has a gazillion options I just don't use it because I don't like the sound. It all sounds like plastic to me and I always go back to Nomad Factory's Echoes which sounds great but is harder to dial in properly.

Is it just me? Am I being silly?

Since echoboy can be everything from clean to totally screwed well then yes - a little :D I use echoboy and primal tap for all my delays and couldn't live without echoboy. It's very musical to me

You maybe need more time with it... I didn't love it straight away, but now its my favourite and most used delay.

I'd say spend more time. I have the Nomad Factory you mention, and I really feel that Echo Boy is superior.

When I first started using Echoboy, I absolutely loved it. Then I started using H-delay. H-delay at first was ""meh", now I think it is awesome. Comparably, Echoboy sounded thin. I didn't like it anymore. A while later I started using Echoboy again, and was like "Wow", this is great! So are you being silly? Nope I don't think so. Gear is just funny like that.

You are not alone. I don't like it either. I prefer ValhallaUberMod for my delay duties or just the stock delay from my DAW.

Echo Boy has to be one of the most versatile delays you can buy IMO... YMMV

I gotta tell you guys, I LOVE echoboy. I sold the bundle because it's a bit grubby CPU wise and then I went all "reason" and didn't need it.

But I remember after all the years it's been out being overwhelmingly impressed.

To each their own, if you DON'T like it, there are 600 million other options. Good news, if you have it and want to sell it, ST's is great with license transfers

have you tried the various styles? theres a lot of them and they shape the sound pretty drastically. also try turning the width knob all the way up in the tweak menu, for some reason its sent to 80% which makes it kinda narrow sounding, especially when using it as an insert or for saturation.

That's happened to me before as well... I read so much about this or that plug in and get really excited to try it out only to find that I don't like it. Sometimes it takes time to get to know it thoroughly and use it to it's full potential, sometimes it grows on you, and sometimes it never does.

FWIW I do like Echoboy and find it to be quite versatile.

Oh Echoes!! I have their Magnetic and a few other things I think sound quite good.

In terms of Delay I have H-Delay and the T-Racks Delay that are both very good. H-Delay is much more flexible in terms of sound.

Contrary to the urban myth that is floating around out there, the Analog dial on the H-Delay and H-Comp actually activates different type of modelled circuits.

I definitely wouldn't say its perceived generic characteristic is plastic.
There is lot of options, as you've said, but it is very logically thought to me. And its manual is super helpful with good description of every control and possible use.
What particular kind of delay do you want to achieve?

It's the best colour mojo delay + it's fun to experiment with.

As someone else replied, I also didn't like EchoBoy in the beginning. But one day my mind changed. I can't remember though why and how, but since then I love EchoBoy and use every day in every session.

It certainly doesn't sound like plastic and it has a ton of options. I guess you will be there too, one day and then you'll be ashamed of this post

On the serious side: If you don't like it, you don't like it. That's not silly. We all have different tastes.

Kinda wondering is this a case of "don't like echoboy['s presets]"?

So many models, so much flexibility, would recommend taking a few hours to dig in before writing it off ... drive the input gain if all else fails.

Each to their own, but for me echoboy is the best all round delay I own, no problems with its sound. Only other ones coming close for me are Primal Tap and the UADs, imho it's streets ahead of waves and nomad.

If Echoboy sounds plastic try Roland RE 201 or Maestro Echoplex.

I really like Echoboy, but I often find with any new plugin, that it takes time to really get them. I also love Boz Imperial Delay, sounds great & very, very versatile.

I've played with it a lot and tried all sorts of styles and I love that it's so versatile but I just can't get a sound I like. Maybe it's just not for me. Oh well.

And thanks everybody for their suggestions, I've got some demoing to do!

I don't care for H-comp, but H-delay has that "sounds good in a mix" thing working for it. My wup long since expired on both so I'll be owning those both for life (the H-comp/delay were a pair at a terrific price, so that's why I have both)

Hahaha!!

Well thank god we all have different tastes. If we all used exactly the same thing in the same way, music would be incredibly boring.

I like the sound and flexibility of Echoboy but the silly GUI is horrible, similar to other SoundToys plug ins: dark little knobs and switches on a dark background. Looks like some blobs in a wooden frame on my 30" monitors from a bit distance. On top of this the GUI is not resizable. The designer should be whipped in public. The GUI is a sort of gimmicky and mindless. The sound quality is very convincing.

Absolutely agree. Love the sound and tweakability, but the interface is not well thought out. A switch should never hide a function or parameter value.
