Gearslutz Community Choice Awards - What's the best Compressor Plugin?

“What is the best…??”

How many Gearslutz threads start with this question? Love it or roll your eyes at it, it comes up all the time.

While we probably all realise that there is no single ‘magic bullet’ for every recording and production challenge, there are certainly pieces of gear that seem to come up in discussion a little more often than others.

One of the great things about Gearslutz is that we have a very diverse cross-section of experiences in order to draw suggestions from to answer this question. With that in mind, and considering a wide-range of budgets, we are launching the Gearslutz Community Choice Awards.

We want YOU to tell us what your favourite bits and pieces around your studio are - what your personal ‘bests’ are - and we will devise some "Top-10" lists from it (with information to accompany) - so that we can help give people with that age-old ‘what is the best’ question a little nudge in the right direction.

We have trawled the archive to come up with some suggestions already, this is entirely based on what has been posted in the past - but if we’ve missed anything, feel free to write in your suggestion.

In this thread we'll ask for your favourite Compressor plugin.

Simply type in your favourite and post!

Note: the nominations stage will run for three weeks. Once this ends we will compile the results and make a poll. Please nominate today! Thanks very much in advance for helping out!

Acustica Ultramarine. Sounds like nothing else in the box. from subtle, gluey goodness with finesse, to hard spanking in style. M/S in particular is beautiful on this plug. Luxurious.

This was a hard one since I was divided between 4 compressors, I choose the one I considered more versatile under various circumstances.

Slate FG-116
I would mention two more but I guess we should name only one thing.
I choose FG-116 cause I use it a lot and often mostly for vocals, drums and bass. It's Light on CPU (which is very important) and sounds amazing.

Since I can only pick one, I will go with UAD 1176 REV. A (Blue Stripe). I don't like mixing a vocal without it.

Kotelnikov

I have all the UA comps the Klamghelm and some great Airwindows comps.

The Tokyo Dawn Kotelnikovis the single best digital compressor I have ever used.

Not only does it have several clever, original features I've not seen anywhere
before, it sounds fantastic. While it is not supposed to sound like a replica of
anything, I find it reminds me greatly of my pair of LA3A's, just way faster and
way more flexible.

I am stunned at how good this thing is.

It has so much tonal flexibility, it has taken the place of several plug ins in my
standard channel strip configuration.

It's hard to just pick one -- it would almost be easier if split into "clean" and "character," or "track" and "mastering."

That said, my pick would be Klanghelm MJUC.

Here for the gear
FabFilter Pro-C.

Very versatile, and the M/S comp when sidechained is very handy.
