Can we get a sticky for OS Update best practices?

Every time Apple/Microsoft releases a major OS update the forums are deluged with folks having issues with X software or Y hardware. Maybe we should post a sticky with best practices as in

1. If you have a working stable system then wait 6-12 months to migrate to the new OS or maybe don't, just don't at all.
2. If you must migrate, make sure every piece of software and hardware you have/use regularly has updated drivers or versions that work with the OS
3. CLONE YOUR BOOT/OS DRIVE before you migrate so that if there are issues you can quickly and easily revert to your previous stable or at least working configuration

I welcome other suggestions for best practices that I may not have considered.

We've all probably been burned by an OS update, maybe we should try and warn anyone new to this to take the proper precautions.

Cheers.
