The 1st time, I didn't keep much.

The 2nd time, I kept everything.

this. nothing sounds as good as an eventide

1176 Rev D - Lead Vocals.
SSL mstr comp - Snare
La22a - Kick
Urei 535 - Gtrs

Masterbuschain :
Xpressor, Tk audio bk1 , CraneS Spider summing.

Maybe more of a hybrid approach but i really feel the analogue gear gives glue and punch in a way ITb can't produce

I think I finally got rid of all the unecessaries...

So all I kept for mixing are two bus compressors which I also use for tracking. Everything else is ITB.

I have quite a bit of hardware for tracking. The only thing I actually use for mixing is my Buzz DBC20

Since my last post, I’ve gone much further down the rabbit hole.

Outboard is now mostly tube gear, or character pieces:

Manley Vari Mu
Summit TLA 100a
Summit EQP-200a
A Design Hammer
Avalon 747
CBS Audimax
Joe Meek SC2
Vintech CA609
DBX 902

Would still say I’m mostly ITB, with the HW on 2 bus and other groups.

Bought and sold both these units by the mid '90s and regret it to this day. Fantastic call to hang onto them, man!

My Kemper Rack will stay 'though... forever, unless superseded.

Interesting how many of us have mentioned this unit in the thread already - what, 4 or 5 of us?

Have been big into UAD for some time, but have supplanted many of those with Acustica plugins over the past year. Head to head, Acustica almost always sounds better. I tried to like Unison mic pres, but good hardware pres always sound a bit better. So Phoenix, Chandler, Pendulum, etc. pres and sometimes comps for tracking.

I also like the Avalon 747 as part of my homebrew hardware mastering chain, though sometimes switching in the tube signal path is too much with other tube processors. Got Telefunkens in it now, maybe swapping in a mellower tube might help? Using Antelope DA/AD and > Dangerous Liaison > Hendyamps Michelangelo / Pendulum OCL-2 / Manley Mini-Massive / Avalon 747 / Dangerous Compressor / A-Designs Hammer2.

I am tempted to simplify and sell at least some of these pieces as I probably won't lose much with Acustica on the 2-buss. Emotional attachment, I guess. Like a favorite, comfortable pair of jeans. If I don't sell them, I can't regret selling them!

Oh yeah, another Kemper lover here. Got some nice amps I really should sell. But same emotional attachment problem!

Ha! So many Kemper users hang onto their tube gear for those rainy days that for most seem to never come. Hope yours do occur at some point, mate. Congrats on your ownership.

Funny how it's the selling of tube hardware for software, but in the Kemper's case, it's not an ITB migration. That's gotta be at least half a dozen of us now...

Q-Clone and Mix Templates has also prolonged the life of my outboard eq's with ITB workflow.

I have a template that uses a "clone" of my mix bus EQ with other broad EQ "clones" for distorted GTRs, Lead GTR's, Bass, and Toms. Just load the template in ProTools and its like having the hardware routed on to the tracks.

Totally swear Q-Clone was way ahead of its time.

Man do I want to try that vintech 609. Do you own the uad33609? Just wondering if it's the same vibe but muuuuch better

I never got into outboard signal processing because it is a bottomless money pit but I did go hardware instruments for a while. So I currently still have an Access Virus TI, Oberheim Xpander and Roland JD-990. I had a Jomox Sunsyn and a Roland Juno 106 in addition to that.

I basically just use the Virus TI as a glorified MIDI controller. I have more patches built on Virus than any other synth by far - roughly 3x banks of 128 patches going back to 2004 but I almost never program it now.

Its not that I don't think these things sound good anymore. I still think Xpander sounds amazing. I think Virus always sounded like crap but you could make it sound good with a lot of effort and you can program big patches really fast, which is good. Sunsyn was kinda noisy but amazing. Juno 106 to this day still sounds amazing to me but all of it is so incompatible with my computer workflow that I value the convenience more than the sound. I feel like I can't replicate the sound of the hardware exactly, but I can make things in software that are different but sound great in their own way.

So I'm thinking of ditching the JD-990 and Xpander too. I don't know why I hang onto these things. Familiarity or nostalgia. I don't use them much or at all anymore.

How do you find the Dangerous Comp? Had my eye on that for a while, seems like a versatile unit.

I do have UA’s excellent 33609.

I will avoid any “is it exactly like” conversation, and say that I turn to both the SW and HW for similar reasons, a certain solidness and density.

My default mixing “template” has the HW CA609 on the lead vocal and the bass because I like what it brings to those important instruments even more than the UA.

Maybe it’s just the physical dials, but I feel I get what I want faster with the HW, so it earns the top spot for me.

More and more I wonder if the physicality of knobs is why I get where I want to be faster with HW.

Preferring HW is quite the tax (price, workflow), but for me, I get there faster, which ultimately impacts the way my tracks sound.

If I can move through my choices at a certain pace, I’m usually happier with my mix.

Probably better that you don't know, Fanu, but... it's guitar / bass / preamp etc. "EMUs" (actually, "Profiles" you can capture yourself) in a box. Please don't blame me if you go broke.

The filters mean I'll never part with mine, Robobaby. The internal-card implementation sux big-time, but oh, that sound!

Even if I hardly ever use it, I just can't imagine not keeping it. I hope you don't end up regretting letting it go, mate. I did that during the '90s and regretted it right up 'til I completely refurbed one at great expense 5 years ago.

I have many hardware eq’s and have been saying I am gonna try q-clone for about a year now. I’m going to try it tonight. I normally print hardware eq’d tracks back into my daw and take pics of my 2bus eq. Do you normally use the same captures on most of your mixes or capture the eq curve for each mix. In theory, it’s an awesome idea.

Several years on from this thread and my studio keeps evolving. I’m still technically mostly in the box using virtually all UAD plugs, but I continue to keep real tube, saturation, and tape HW, because I just can’t quite get as good of results ITB. I’m positive others could. I just can’t let go of:

Tube
Sta-Level
LA-2A (Audioscape)
Redd.47 Preamp
2a3 EQ

Saturation
MAS

Tape
Space Echoes
Echoplexes

Other

Wish you hadn’t shown me that.

Is this a product they make, or something they made specially for you?
