Focusrite Scarlett clipping with dynamic mic

I record my guitar through a fender champ 600, a 5 watt tube amp. I record it
with a dynamic mic (Sennheiser MD421) into my Focusrite Scarlett 18i8.

No matter what I do the i get clipping. I've tried lowering the gain on the scarlett but even at very low gain the signal clips. The Halo is never red and the signal in scarlett mixcontrol never hits the roof.

Still there's clipping.

I've tried turning on the pad, changing to a different mic and a different input but nothing helps.

Is there anything i'm missing? Is it broken? Or are the Scarlett preamps just crap?

what are your daw settings? sample rate and buffer?

what are your audio midi setup settings?

does the scarlett mixcontrol show your sample rate?

try 44.1 across the board with a 512 buffer then go to 256 then 128 then 64

i can usually do 44.1 at 64 with different gear

my setup acts funny at 96hz logic x thinks its running at 96500 so i probably need a master clock but f it lol

Hi ljudsystem,

Sorry to hear that you are having issues. I would suggest testing the interface with another mic to see if the issue is still present. I would also advise for you to reach out to us so that we can assist you further on the matter:

I've tried with a different mic, same problems.

Have contacted Focusrite but they haven't responded yet.

sounds good man

make sure your daw, interface software, and audio midi setup(mac)

are all set on scarlett 44.1 and again start with 512 then 256 128 64

your process buffer range start at small with all settings above

then rinse and repeat with process buffer range at medium

If the clipping doesn't show up on the interface or Mix Control meters, where are you seeing it? DAW input or output? Or are you only hearing it?

I hear it through my headphones and when playing back the recorded track.

Hi, can you upload a sample so we also can hear the type of distortion?

Med vänliga hälsningar Olof.

Maybe it's an interconnect, faulty mic, or some other distortion. Clipping should show up on a meter somewhere in the chain.

Ok, so I tried to record the clipping yesterday evening and what do you know? No clipping!

I didn't do anything differently as far a I know. Next time the clipping happens i'm gonna try lowering the buffer. For the moment it's set at 10ms latency.

anyway, thanks for the help guys.
