As far as i know there is no tape emulation doing everything in one instance atm.
Would say the best tapes are from CDSoundMaster and TimP

There's none that I know of.

Most are coloration.

cDSM is providing saturation if im not mistaken.

Maybe check Tim P T-Tape.... But again, I think its only a coloration, not the full behavior.

Let me know if you find anything.

Hi,

T-tape has a saturator, like a clip and tape sat in one. If you check this vid you'll see it in action at 36 seconds in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iZl4ew2HcI and with 37j I made a IEC equalization saturator, It's basically a pre/de emphasis style sat. I think some are surprised how linear the old machine is. When I sampled it, It was basically newly out of restoration, where I worked from, you can check a photo on my twitter of the actual machine https://twitter.com/Tim_Petherick?lang=en

I also added a print through feature in t-tape, which was designed for that echo print through

Hope this helps

Tim

Great work! I remember seeing the RE-501 Chorus Echo on G's instagram, so that's probably in there somewhere too...

Don't know, man, I'm pretty sure the two Rolands are the 150 (only 2 playback heads) and the 201, as the name of the program implies.

Maybe G is saving some devices for Lemon 2?

Nice work, SameOh,
I just investigated the oldest emulations, I mean 50/60s and I agree your list, I didn't get the Milano one, Semprini, good work! And about B77 I feel the same: ????

Hey Tim,

Thx for chiming in. Really appreciated.

I'm happy to know that you were able to capture the tape saturation behavior at different input level.

So is it possible to use it to compress aswell ?

I mean, can we smash a snare in there ?

A word on the technical achievement in lemon: in nebula the fastest dynamic device in best case is working at half sample rate (0.4 usec at 44.100). Situation is worse at higher frequency rates (ie 96 kHz). Lemon is working at full sample rate. So saturation in lemon is instantaneous, like you woud expect (4 times faster than the fastest dynamic device in nebula at 96). Normally the engine used by nebula is named acqua, and there are implementation constraints. Lemon is using also an engine named aria, and it works at full speed and very low cpu load (ie the ivory 3 clipper)
Possibly it will be oversampled in 2018, so we are going to decrease the program rate further
I think the achievement is very relevant for modeling
- Clippers (you need to saturate all samples)
- Tapes (because the instantaneous compression/clipping: I think cdsoundmaster created an other plugin in the past because this)
- Output transformers and saturation (ie preventing the ringing artifact when you overload a program)

Yes the compression should be instant. It runs at fastest program rate and I have a technique to get it just over the speed of the program rate it can be more acurrate but at the risk of more aliasing. About the ringing artifact. If we talking about the same thing, I be got a technique that eliminates that or significantly reduces that and I’ve been doing that for well over year already....

37j was compression is different from t-tape. 37j is saturator is based on a pre/de emphasis type compression, distortion. Basically the 37j uses a mixture of kernals for the first stage then second stage is a compression/clipper again I can make it so it squares of harder if needed but was going for a more subtle darkner. If you sample the result of a pre-emphasis type saturation you only get the result and not the true reaction. To do it properly I needed to make it two stage. So this is to just keep in mind the two will sound different. T-tape is more of a input clip and tape sat.

Just a note, because maybe my previous message was not clear enough.
The acqua engine cannot be faster then 0.4 us @44.1. Problem is the refresh rate of the acqua engine, which was optimized for sse2 and works in blocks of 2 samples.
Forcing acqua engine to a single sample causes crash bugs, depending on the optimization method. Even doing so, the cpu load would be really insane. I don't think my computer could handle it in real-time at 96Khz. This is the reason for the aria engine. Even if you set it faster, acqua engine doesn't go faster, this is the point. This is also the reason why we were forced to code a different engine, and everything should follow it accordingly otherwise there is the same program rate penality. Even doing it, our compressors have such kind of limitation, and only just recently we are clipping and saturating at the correct program rate speed. It was a technical constraint, and the solution comes from completely different code, primitives, tags. Just to explain clearly, if there is a single spike of a single sample, acqua engine could let it go, aria not.

About pre/de emphasis you are correct, infact we have an incoming plugin based on multiple stages, but still lemon shines cause what I said before.

yes I experimented with a double speed and quadruple speed at 96, To me there were better ways to deal with such a tiny thing. I had no crashes when forcing 0.22 at 44.1....interesting.

Good to see that pre/de will be used in a future product. So there you go, excellent stuff!! Just sharing my knowledge!!
I'm Just simply answering a guys question here about whether my stuff has a saturation instance extra or not......
I don't see any problem with the way I've set it up. Gets the job done and very proud of what I have done.

the engine doesn't tell you, but it doesn't go. It cannot. There are sections of the engine working at slower speed cause constraints. Things are not refreshed accordingly or not. And depending on the optimization method you could get crashes, or it goes slower. Yes possibly it could lead to higher aliasing, I don't know.

About the pre/de, it is a common thingy, I even didn't know you was using it somewhere.
Yes a very common thing that no one happened to do before nebula....

and I've stated all my stuff everywhere, I'm very open about everything I do.

Hey Tim, nice job on the 37j, I use it frequently.

But now I'm more excited with new upcoming L-Bus. Any ETA on that?

I'll not be surprise if it blow some other plugin out of the beach.

Hahaha. So I've heard I've been a reader for quite some time...

You bet. Yeah, I found CDSM's site. It was a little confusing because they recommend all three for the full experience... So far Tim's seems like the way to go after seeing a couple short clips on youtube. (And that 1176 and LA3A!) O_O

I purchased an Acustica plugin from the classified section of Gearslutz on Thursday last week but still nothing in my account. Seller says he's going back and forth with support at Acustica, does anyone know how long it usually takes for the transfer please?

Cheers
