menyou.com.....thoughts?

Wondering what people's thoughts on this new site are.

I have no financial connection to it whatsoever, but found out about it as a guy who was in my class in school for about 6 months 25 years ago is one of the creators.

Seems like maybe it could do something positive for creators of music and other digitally copiable art in respect to actually getting payed to some extent.

The thing works like a marketplace. You decide on your sale price and also your resale percentage. So, say you want to sell an album for 5GBP and make your resale 10%. Menyou take 20% of the FIRST sale, so out of your first sale you get 4GBP (=80%). THEN, if whoever bought your album sells it on to someone else, which he can do by re-entering it onto the marketplace at whatever price he likes, you then get your resale percentage out of that sale, so if he sells for 4GBP you automatically get 40p. And so on.

So you get effectively a place where you can buy music in a way that supports the artist (instantly gets payed) + you can sell the music on to literally get your money back, at which point the artist gets payed again every time it changes hands. Looks a little interesting I'd say. Whether it can stay afloat, who knows.......

Would be very interested in your opinions chaps.

hi karloff, no offence to your former classmate, but this idea needs a serious face-lift. based on your description here it appears this business model comes from a good place; an attempt to pay artists and refund the consumer for their loyalty to an artist... and that's awesome in theory. but IMO the whole thing's dead in the water because of the unfortunate name choice for the project! get in touch with your friend asap and tell him to hire someone that can fix the (rather funny) brand crisis he's created for himself! ouch!

lol.....well, not my business really. Those chaps (he's not on his own) have been in high level music and film business prep meetings and all sorts worldwide for a long time before launch and I'm sure they are happy with their branding. Neither here nor there to me personally, doesn't offend me particularly.

Was more interested in views on the likelyhood that this thing could turn into something positive for artists or not.......

at least from my point of view, until further info is published about the nuts and bolts of this site/idea, and until they change the name, it's a lost cause not worth wasting time discussing...

unfortunate. it sounds like an initiative that comes from a good place. the issue of the music industry being hammered by the tech industry in terms of image and marketing has been discussed to death on these forums: giant marketing gaffes like "menyou".com certainly don't help!

I'd echo the same - that name is just awful. Plus the site design is very 1999/2000. Needs a lot......

The name is a disaster. And none of these things are going to work as long as people can go take music for free.

Until illicit music downloads are addressed at the ISP level, like spam, everything else is pointless.

Menyou.com...hmmm....I dont understand the play on words at all..

People don't go to myspace, bandcamp, purevolume, reverbnation, to find new music, so they sure as hell aint going to go to a place called Menyou.com

so your 'fans' can re-upload your music, undercut your price by any amount they want and sell it again? After they already have and get to keep their copy of the song?

and you only get the 'commission' on the second sale, right?

What's to stop them from selling it for one cent? Anyone who takes the time to seed a file-sharing site could just do this as well. He won't make any money you say? Well he's not making any money uploading to file sharing either.

you could sell ONE COPY and afterwards only get a slice of an ever-diminishing pie, and it's OK because it's your fans who are doing it to you? Thanks, fans!

In its own way, this is just like the begging sites, not a 'fresh idea', but just another symptom of the sheer desperation of artists in a label-less world.

Oh, and it's unanimous about the name!

LOL.........seems unanimous indeed. Might have to go with the crowd after thinking about it and agree, that name is not a good thing....lol

I still like the idealism in thought behind it, but whether it actually does anything of worth would be doubtful I guess......but s*it, the more I hear the name in my head, you're all too right....sounds plain wrong....

I think the name is good actually, doesn't matter what the name is as long as people remember it more than other sites and don't have a problem spelling it. Set an alarm on your watch 2 hours from now and you will still know exactly the name of this site from hearing about it once.

From the front page though I don't "get" what it is, it sounds kind of money making scammish and I'm closing the page without joining or even thinking of joining.
Almost seems like it needs a longer explanation on the front page.
