Electric isn't too bad, believe it or not. I actually think I'm doing a little better since going all modular.

Also... that's what she said.

I've been in a similar situation where I've had too many synths in the past and it just became chaotic trying to get a cohesive track together. I haven't run into this yet with the modular and I'd even go so far as to say that I've been more productive since starting this up. Probably because of the way that I work, I'd venture. The modular is mostly sample fodder and the music I write is ultimately composed using two primary instruments or Renoise loaded up with samples I've created. Yeah, there's a lot of modules in here that I have strictly for playing around i.e. Stillson Hammer, Circadian Rhythms, and Oberkorn, but I acknowledge that those noodles are strictly for my own entertainment.

As far as tuning, that's what got me into sampling in the first place. I hate fighting with oscillator tuning, so I just tune the samples after the fact.

Seriously, do you have patch cables long enough to patch from one end of the modular to the other?
Yes I do, but I'm going to need more now. Before, I had four racks of Euro in a semicircle, but adding the fifth made it too big to fit in the old room and in here, that kind of arc is impractical, so it takes longer cables to make patch connections that weren't such a stretch before.

What does MG calculate the value of your setup at?

You need some tables or something reaching down like that would kill my back.
MG puts me at 220 Euro units and 34 DotCom modules.

MG calculates it as $37,463 for the Euro and $4,892 for the DotCom. This doesn't reflect what I really paid for these at all because MG goes by new prices and user input to guesstimate others. Most of this was purchased used, demo models, or at a discount. I've got an inventory that keeps track of everything... but it can't show just one subset of data, and it's on my Palm Pilot. One of these days I'm going to need to figure out how to export data from Splash Shopper so I can get the information in a spreadsheet and off of this archaic piece of technology.

As far as the back issue, I definitely feel you there. My original plan when I started all this was to sit on the floor and wiggle because I saw Richard Devine doing it that way, but that's where I found out that old age is catching up to me in that it's often a one-way trip and my back still kills me. I've got the Euroracks on milk crates, which helps tremendously. The bottom row is pretty much no-man's land (I can patch and twiddle knobs, but don't expect me to bend over to read that small print!) The wife is getting me more milk crates from a friend of hers so I'll have some extra for the DotCom and for future expansion, but the long term plan is that if we go through with buying a house, I'm going to set up a small work area and build the tables and racks that I really want.

I just love modular. Even when I'm not making showtunes, I find it relaxing just to patch up my own personal cacophonic symphony. My goal is to see if I can beat Cyrus Rex by the end of the year (filling up the fifth row of my fifth rack means I've officially matched him, anything after that is just icing on the cake.) I'd love to beat Beermaster's 'Fat Bastard' rig, but even if I match him on quantity of modules, I won't ever match him on quality because his Euro is rocking a lot of high-end stuff (whole rows of Cwejman) and his 5u system is loaded with some pretty rad stuff while mine is just focusing on DotCom.

Looking at Modular Grid, looks like Folktek has a whole line of modules coming out, but am I the only one that finds their personal patchbay thingie kind of off-putting? Seems that the point of modular is to get everything playing with each other, but they're obviously trying to turn their modules into their own self-contained system.

Those little cables and patch points are a huge turn-off for me. Everything is already so small and jammed in as it is...those are where I draw the line.

Well, I'm sure you recognize the module in the upper left of fourth and fifth pictures sitting in a row all by itself right now.

I'd just worry that the little breadboard connectors will fail. At least on the cheapo prototyping breadboards I've used each hole has a limited lifespan. It's usually just a strip of metal that clamps along the row. As it loosens up or gets worn away by repatching they eventually don't make a reliable connection.

It is a novel approach to internal settings and Folktec like to keep it weird so more power to em. It would be difficult to manage in a crowded patch though.

I could get used to waking up to that every morning. At the pace I buy modules it will probably take another couple decades.

It's easy! Just stop eating anything that isn't ramen noodles and sell off nonessential stuff like movies, music, keyboards, monitors, children, kidneys, things like that!

I wonder if this could somehow be combined with parasites as a 7th mode by someone... looks fantastic, but not really willing to give up parasites :p

Yes I seen Mr.Devine post a video on Facebook, I'm hoping somebody will merge the beat repeat firmware with parasites (if there's enough space on the chip)

This post pains me...purely because I feel like a cat fancier looking at an older cat hoarder and realizing it is their future.

I need more rack space and while I do not typically name instruments my current 416 HP eurorack system is named "The Orphan" because it is always a module away from being perfect.

mqtthiqs or whatever his names is said at one point that Parasites used all of the available RAM on Clouds to the point where he had to change the default mode to optimize it to use less RAM. (might be forgetting the exact details). Anyway I wouldn't count on that happening.

And the correct answer is of course buy two.

He's also said this last revision of parasites would be his last, so I would guess the best way to incorporate some of the functionality would be to add some of Parasites to this new firmware. But it won't be mqtthiqs or whoever.

You will be disappointed because I made a mistake and said U vs HP, but I was also lying to myself as it is really 4*105 HP or 416 HP.

Sorry about the bad camera phone but I just took this as I was pulling cables to start on a new patch and couldn't find the remote to turn up the lights.

I need another row at least as there is a random set of ~50HP of other modules that have to be swapped in and out depending on the patch I am working on at the time.
