Ever had a dupplication house lose the master?

Just curious.

In this day and age, with uploading DDP files it's probably not much of an issue anymore.

But has it ever happened to you? When you had to re-cut the master, who got billed for the time?

Yes.

We re-did it on a 'complimentary' basis ... no charge.

Yes. I told the client that the plant is liable but I would make a new one at a discounted rate them. I ended up geting my full rate as the client followed through & made the plant pay for it.

About a year ago a client called me up all upset. He said the plant where he was having his CD manufactured had called him and told him they "lost" the CD master. I made him another master, shipped it to the plant via FedEx overnight and billed the client for the FedEx charges. About two weeks later he called me and said the plant had found the original in the "trash" It was not the client's fault the plant lost the master so I did not charge him for a new one. Good client with lots of potential client referrals. A win/win situation.

So far this year, I had one plant-stored master lost (SACD AIT tape), one plant-stored master become unreadable (SACD AIT tape) and one vinyl lacquer broken.

- In the case of the lacquer, the plant has agreed to pay for the re-cut.
- In case of the unreadable tape, the plant denies all liability (even though the tape apparently had been internally known to be "failing" since 2006, yet not backed up during all that time) and will not pay for replacement.
- In the case of the lost tape, I don't know. But as with the other tape, the plant is located in Germany, where the legal system doesn't encourage litigation in such matters; so I assume the reaction will have been the same ("our terms & conditions say we can't bear any responsibility for the materials we store, so unfortunately we can't pay for a new master to be made").

I've had a plant lose a master once. My client called me about three months after a project was supposed to be released asking for a new master, which I supplied free of charge. They said they kept calling the plant, asking when the CDs were going to be done and the last time they said "the master had clicks & pops in it". Well, it didn't when I made it, I test everything and I use the best media available. Given the time that passed and the fact that the client had to keep calling, I think they just lost it and wouldn't admit it. The biggest problem I have with plants is the master getting altered, either by adding silence between tracks that we didn't want or by running an analogue line output to another recorder. I have no idea why or how that happens.

Most masters I make get replicated without any issues. But I encourage all clients to send me the earliest possible production disk so I can compare it with my files.
