you absolutely can and probably should use a compressor on the bass. Sometime the order of either eq-compress or compress-eq is important. Even in house music the trick is to let the kick take the bottom end and don't try to have to bass go too low. Usually for me an eq with a hpf going into a compressor is all I need.

A multi-band compressor or dynamic EQ on the bass can be more transparent since it won't attenuate the upper harmonics when it clamps down on a resonant note. Worth a try.
