what else would you say ...?
i have been thinking about it for a while after reading this post
but i have nothing to add

this seems to me the theme of my life

"what do you do for a living rick..?"
"err i make records" "do you you mean cds..?"
"no records"
"for anybody i might have heard of ...? "
" err yes.. "
"when you say you make records what does that actually mean "
" well i own a large studio and i am a mastering engineer"
"a mastering engineer ..? whats that ...?what do they do "

"we make records ... "

Of course it's a record--derived from recording.

But I don't think of mp3's as recordings. They are "mp3 files" to me. I mean they are digitally converted data derived from real recordings. And when you consider that the data is thrown out to make them it just doesn't seem right to refer to them as recordings unless the ADC went straight into making them, like on a portable 2 track recorder or something.

More often then not, a collection of mp3's is not an album, but just a selection of mp3 files.

I guess I'm biased about this.

I like how a compilation of various artists put on cd for a friend is still referred to as a "mix tape".

Any who... I put "record" and "album" into two different categories:

A record is any collection of songs released by an artist.

An album is a cohesive body of work, where the songs don't stand as well on their own as they do in the context of the whole.

Pink Floyd's "Dark Side" is an album
Neutral Milk Hotel's "Aeroplane over the sea" is an album

Unfortunately, I may be the only one using said classification, so when I hear someone say "have you heard the new Jonas brothers album", it makes me die a little inside.

That's all not to say that there aren't bands putting out great records, but in my eyes, it's gotta earn the right to be called an album.

I'm 37, and use "album" all the time, but "record" not so much anymore.. Actually I use "CD" more, and interchangeably with album. I really got into CD's early'ish, around 87's, and at the time, as an excited teen, it didn't make sense to call them records, plus i liked talking about my cd's , yes, i was a geek. anyway, it kinda stuck.. heck, i will even say "i downloaded the new so&so's CD off itunes." Not that makes much more sense, since CD is just a Format.. To me, album still makes the most sense..
