Odd bit depth issue

I received some client mixes recently with a strange bit depth issue that I've never seen before with something odd going on below the 16 bit level. File info shows they were created in Sound Forge 6.0 (current version is 13), and the client is also still using an ancient Mackie digital board, so I'm wondering if it's related to one of those.

Maybe they printed at 16 bit and converted to 24 bit before sending to you?

That's what it looks like.

That makes sense, thanks. I'm just looking at the manual for the Mackie D8B and it has 16 bit dither selectable on the outputs, so I suspect that it's turned on. I sent him the info on the menu page to check, so hopefully he can get it sorted out.

When I used to use Elephant, I used to love making 23 bit masters for people.
