Multi-DA: CROOKWOOD or HILO

Hi,

I will be very happy to get your advice / opinion.

We need to choose a 6 channels multi-DAC.
We have pre-selected :
- HILO Lynx
- CROOKWOOD DA converters

The Sound quality is the most important factor.
The HILO has much more options (which is not negligible).

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Have a nice day.

Not tried the Hilo, but been running solely Crookwood conversion (2 x DAC and 1 x ADC) since 2011 and am still very happy with it/not thinking of upgrading etc.

6 channels in what specification?
DAC analog output?

Hilo has 4 analog outputs (main out stereo, monitor out stereo), 2 analog inputs. (Also a separate DAC to feed the stereo headphones output.)

The sound is great, I used one for several years for monitoring and analog transfer DA.

But If you're needing 6x DAC outputs for multi-channel/surround sound, a single Hilo won't work.

have not tried Hilo either. I have multiDAD from Crookwood with 5 DAC's and 3 ADC's. really good product and if you need any help Crispin is always quick to help.

Thanks a lot for for your replies.

@ B Elgin
It is for multi-channel. It seems one can use all 6 outputs of the Hilo (including the headphone output).

I have a HILO’s and a Crookwood M4
Borh are great but serve very different roles for me

Crookwood as monitor control and HILO more for mix/master insert

HILO works well as monitor controller but lacks the designated buttons of a Crookwood so requires a fair amount of touching the screen and scrolling pages/parameters which can be fiddly

Sound quality is great Witt both units and as previously mentioned Crispin is great and really goes that extra mile when it comes to helping with any questions you have

Less so LYNX but then they’re a much bigger company

Are you looking for 6 mono channels or three stereo channels?

Thanks to all.

@ Slug1
3 stereo channels (but 6 mono could do a job too)

Hilo is amazing conversion with two line level DACs and an independent stereo headphone DAC. So that’s three, but one is headphone. Another option might be a Mytek 8x192 or Prism Orpheus.

mytek 8x192 seems like the better option for this use case. generally rated on the same level as crookwood and hilo.

i don't have either, but have been using the mytek for a while with great results. very punchy and linear.

You definitely can. You can route different channels from your DAW over USB or TB to different outputs (Line Outputs, Monitor Out, Phones) on the Hilo.

There's also a master volume control mode (adjustable via the front knob) with the v8 firmware that can attenuate multiple outputs. I never tried setting it up for all 3 output pairs together though, but it may be possible. You'd have to play with the analog output calibration levels to get all the outputs level matched prior to feeding your monitors or controller too.

Download the v8 manual and maybe inquire on their official forums for more information.

Good news, master volume control, I will investigate the manual.

Happy Xmas !
