Does Spotify cut presence?

Newly started using a stream service although for now only listening at home.

I remember reading discussions on how these services would finish the loudness wars but I'm not liking the sound quality at all.

Compared a cd to it matching levels best I can, feels worse than typical mp3 conversion quality decrease (?).

Maybe try Tidal or Qobuz, they offer lossless content.

With Spotify, if you have a premium account you can set up the app to "extreme quality" and then it should be OGG codec at 320kb/s which is considered better than mp3.

You should also consider that if several app are running on your computer, the sound engine of the OS has to deal with different sample rate and might do realtime SRC in order to make everything work properly. And it's not really good soundwise.
