It sounds suspiciously as though the source was an MP3. Is that correct?

Multiband is definitely NOT a secret weapon. It's most often a cheap software trick used by amateurs to remove all the musicality from a recording.

I only go there as a last resort.

Many people DO use it, and quite happily and effectively I may add.

Its use in mastering isn't so much a secret any more

...but my Complete Ultimate Multiband Master Settings sure are.

If you're really interested, I'd consider trading them for an Unsurpassed Techno Master EQ preset. PM me...

Never really understood the idea that it's cheap software tricks, it's a pretty expensive hardware trick if you own a system 6000!

Multiband isn't a secret weapon. It's just a special one.

How about the use of multiband compressor on mastering rock music?

That totally depends on the mix you receive and the master they want to achieve.
It can be a great tool at hand if for instance the mix is a bit soft and they provide a reference that is very "dense" and different tonal balance (in addition with an EQ).

But beware; a MBC can be very tricky to set up and to "sound correct" for the material. So make sure to learn how to use it - in depth - before you use it on something.

As for genre-wise... Sure, rock can benefit from it just as pop, hiphop, EDM etc. If classical, ethereal etc... Then I'm confident to say you most likely are doing more harm than good.
