The dB ceiling for digital distribution

Hi,

I've been doing a lot of amateur mastering (yeah..) for years for friends, which are mostly jams, experimental or arty stuff, that we release for free on the web. This includes bandcamp & the streaming websites.

I've always put the ceiling on the final limiter at -1dB, to avoid digital artifacts/peaks during the conversions to mp3 (and the likes). But I'm starting to wonder if I'm not doing this for nothing. Every plug-in limiter that I've come across has a ceiling of -0.3dB by default.

Am I losing too much loudness by putting the ceiling on my final limiter to -1dB ? Am I playing it too safe ?

There's no real consensus, as you will see from the discussion here:

Peak Headroom

It's a trade-off between technically 'clean' vs musical impact.
