Converters and signal flow?

Hi,
I have been mastering itb, but just took delivery of a Tegeler Manufaktur master compressor.
I have been using a Roland octacapture with an spdif going into the burr brown dac of my heritage audio RAM 2000. So I'm bypassing the converters of the soundcard altogether.
however, now I need to go analog and back to use the outboard.
do I buy an external converter and somehow hook it up to the Roland?
or do these act as soundcards too?
How about latency for the times I need to track something?
basically, what's my next purchase going to be, and could someone shed some light on the mystery if using external converters? (how and where to hook them up)

Looking at the Lynx Hilo or the prism Lyra2.

Send out of track through Roland and back in through different inputs to another track.

Yes - Eventually, you'd probably want a nicer set of converters for this task.
