vocal shield alternative ? (pillow??) Microphone Accessories
Old 7th August 2014
Question vocal shield alternative ? (pillow??)

Any creative suggestions for diy mic shield ?

Would pillows be a good choice to put behind the mic to deaden vocals ?
Pillows have quite a thick layer of cotton. So woulnt they offer absorption upto the mid frequencies? Wouldnt this be better than a primacoustic voxguard made of foam >?

Also would making a cardboard box and filling it with cotton pillow or wool and placing the mic inside it also help in this aspect?

I suppose you could find out by experimenting to see what happens.

Try it.

If you do a search for -Sound Absorption Coefficients- and look at charts like this and others:

Sound Absorption Coefficients

you'll get the general idea that foam and other softer materials don't absorb well at lower frequencies. You can end up leaving the muddy frequencies bouncing around. Most experts dismiss foam and recommend rockwool/rigid fiberglass for broadband absorption and bass traps.

Try everything you can think of and see what works best for you. In the long run, it would be allot faster, easier and maybe cheaper to just get a vocal shield when you factor in the time your going to be using setting up all those alternative methods, the material you will need to buy and the critiquing of each method.
