Analog Multitracking with an Analog 2 Track

I'm looking at doing a project where I record the tracks digitally and then transfer them to 2 track analog tape, one track and time, and then do a final mix in the digital domain.

Since the 8 track analog tape machines are pretty expensive and large, I was wondering if I could get away with using a 2 Track machine several times.

Have any of you guys tried this?

I am not sure what the benefits would be of going from digital to analog in that way. I would think that if you want the sound of recording to tape, you should track to the analog, then transfer to digital. However, this will be very difficult to synch up.

1/2 inch tape machines are cheap!!!!!!!!
On one of these forums a guy gave away a perfectly good working Tascam 80-8 for free just to get rid of it.
