radial JDI picks up distortion from pedals

anyone know why this is happening?

I have the guitar going into the DI box before any pedals. The pass through goes to the pedals and then the amp, the DI goes to a mic preamp. I tried messing with the ground switch and it seems to be less apparent with the ground lifted, but its still there. I'm not using the box in merge mode.

Are you sure it's from the pedals? Have you tried it without them?

Do you have active or really hot pups? Does it clean up, when you turn the volume down on your guitar? Are the cables good? Are you running too hot into the preamp?

yeah its the distortion pedal, when its engaged I can hear noise on the di, when I disengage the noise goes away. Its still a clean signal, but the noise is so apparent you can obviously hear when its on and off.
