M-Audio vs MOTU vs Focusrite

I need to replace my very noisy M-Audio FastTrack Ultra 8r. It is (was) OK in that it did the job. Now I would like to upgrade.

I record mostly classical/choral on location as a paid avocation/hobby. I need 8 I/O and I want something better than the M-Audio but within a reasonable budget. Ideally, it would be a 1 space rack mount.

I am considering the MOTU 8pre or the Focusrite 18i20. Are they better than the M-Audio or would that be a lateral move?

Other suggestions?

They'd both be a step up from the M-Audio, I'd suggest the Focusrite 18i20 over the Motu, but better than both would be the Saffire Pro40 or 56 just because of the preamps.

Thanks for the reply.
Are not the pres in the 18i20 and Pro40 the same? It seems the Pro40 is Firewire (Mac) and the 18i20 is USB (PC).
The 56 has two "liquid" pres but the other 6 seem to be the same as the 18i20 and Pro40.
Am I wrong?

Nope. They're not the same. And the conversion is different too.

From the Focurite web site:

"Scarlett 18i20 is the USB complement of the tried and tested Saffire PRO 40 Firewire interface. "

Just to clarify, the Saffire Pro and Scarlett product ranges share the same preamp and converter designs.

So, to be clear in my head, the Saffire Pro 40 and the Scarlett 18i20 share the same preamps and converters; Pro 40 is Firewire and 18i20 is USB.

What are the differences/reasons to get one over the other?

I had a Focusrite Scarlett 18i6 USB it was nice but it didn't like my laptop with Windows 7 (lots of disconnects on USB it was fine with a Windows xp machine and a vista machine) it also had a noisy power supply (60 cycle hum) I sold it and now I have a Focusrite Pro 40 (FireWire) and I like it much better. No more noise and better preamps. To my ears the Pro 40 sounds better - maybe that was the lack of 60 cycle hum

From the Focusrite Mother ship:

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your mail.

While the 2 units use the same preamps, they do have a few differences.

The 18i20:
- USB 2.0 Device
- Word Clock Output to be used as a Master Clock for devices designed to receive Word Clock via BNC Cable
- 18in/20out

The Saffire Pro 40:
- Firewire Device
- No Word Clock (BNC) Output
- Digital SPDIF Input
- Loopback Inputs (to add 2 more inputs, to give it 20in/20out)

Personally, I have a Pro 40 simply because I use a lot of USB Devices and I didn't want to take up another Port. That tends to be why I see people choose one unit or the other, but performance-wise they behave very similarly.

If you need any more support, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Best regards,

The driver works without a hitch in both of my systems, PC and laptop with windows 7.
I like the preamps a lot and the conversion is very good.
