rice, peas, rough sand, little stones, screws and bolts or other small metal parts, all sorts of little plastic pieces, coins, little pieces of wood, etc...

just make some more of them in different sizes and fill them to different amounts with different materials to get different sounds.

you can also cut two of them in halves and tape them together to get one with only metal ends and one with only plastic ends what also will sound different.

peace, rez

Dried peas, chickpeas, lentils, rice, or various household or natural products (small stones, etc). I usually wrap masking tape around the container to avoid spillage...varying the amount of filler will better suit a variety of rhythms (heavy=slow, light=fast).

The twist-top plastic vitamin containers work well as shakers.

My kid made me a bunch of random shakers one day.. plastic cups and cans, various things like beads, rice, etc. I use them all, too.

lol...I was going to say vitamin containers. The little white supplement/vitamin ones from Lambert's are perfect. I do also have two rolls of full size Pringles......

I've got several I made from plastic Easter eggs. My two favorites are the ones with rice and mung beans in them. My other favorite shaker is a toy abacus.
