White Light/White Heat

How did they get the sound for the title track of this Velvet Underground EP? I love it, but did the producer just not pay attention or something? The drums seems to be clipping, and the whole thing has an overall fuzzy kind of vibe. Anyone know anything about this was produced or how the sound was captured?
