is it possible with mbox 2 ? life question

hello
was wondering if anyone could answer this,
is it possible to use outboard buss compressors on the mix
or outboard gear on the mix for that matter with the mbox 2 ??
thanks

Since you have 4 I/O's (2 analog, 2 digital), you could set this up yes. Mix everything into output 1-2 which goes to compressor, have an extra stereo channel in your project with inputs 1-2 in rec (return from compressor) and outputs 3-4 for monitoring.

Or alternate, 1-2 for monitoring and 3-4 I/O for outboard. You'll need an extra AD/DA convertor anyway (or just D/A in the first example).

I/O

so let me see if I have got this straight.
send out through the analog 1-2 and back through the spdif 3-4

or as I look at the mbox, send out 1-2 through the monitor outs into the compressor ins ,than from the compressor outs to through my mytek a/d in spdif 3-4 onto seperate stereo track in record.

where would the seperate d/a be than?

my main confusion is , which output physically do i run the cords for outs 1-2 from and physically which ins do I put the cords from the outboard compressor into ?

my brain wants to be bigger.

I'll try to show it more simple:

MBox has:
- stereo analog IN
- stereo analog OUT
- stereo digital IN spdif
- stereo digital OUT spdif

You need two stereo OUT:
- one stereo OUT going to your mixbuscompressor
- one stereo OUT going to your monitors

You need one stereo IN:
- one stereo IN coming from your compressor

So now it's up to you which OUT you assign going to compressor, and which you use for monitoring.
In all cases, you need an analog signal for your compressor, as well as for your monitoring. So the one you want too hook up to the stereo digital OUT spdif, needs to have a DA convertor in between.

You can also choose on which of the 2 stereo inputs you want to have the compressor come back. Again, this is an analog signal, so if you want to have it come back on your stereo digital IN spdif, you need an AD convertor (looks like you have a Mytek A/D for that).

So basiclly, you need an extra DA convertor if you don't have one.

Signal chain:
PT -> MBox digital OUT -> extra DA-convertor -> analog compressor -> Mytek AD-convertor -> MBox digital IN -> PT (for recording the mix) -> MBox analog OUT -> monitoring
