Best album you bought for the name or cover

The subject says it all. What are some of the best albums you bought because you liked the title or cover and knew nothing about the band or artist. I bought the Breakestra Live Mix part 2 because of the cover and now it's a staple in my collection. Check out the front cover. On the back was a bunch of guys and the bass player had a P-bass and the guitar player has a Tele with the ashtray cover. I figured it couldn't suck too much. What have your good finds been?

Silicone anyone? Not really my taste but I wouldn't complain. Anyway, how's the music on that one?

Mine was on the left, and it was back in the pre silicon days!

The music? Can't remember!

They are a good band...

to be perfectly honest, now I remember... I just had a poster for this album..

I know people do it all the time but I have NEVER bought an album - for it's cover!

Two (!) albums bought as a pre-teen for the cover;

1) "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake" by the Small Faces
2) "The 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus" by Spirit

The Spirit album has always since been in my top ten faves.
It took me years to "understand" the other one, and now it's my
numero uno favorite of all! (out of 500+ in my collection)

I have never bought an album for the cover, except perhaps for a couple of 7" & 12" singles.

But honestly, there are several albums that I listened to at the shop and then purchased because the cover caught my intrest in the first place.

And then there are some albums that repelled my intrest big time because of the cover... History is full of records that has been re-packaged to promote sales, often with very good results.

I could tell a horror story from my earlier days in this business when I and a couple of friends ran a record label and a particular band insisted on designing the cover themselves. The album was great but the cover sucked, so of course sales was catastrophically weak... since then, I have the greatest respect for people like Peter Saville and many of his peers.

Ok, I didn't actually buy it. I saw it listed in a catalog and wanted it just for the name, never ran across it though...

In 1967, at the age of 16, I saw Freak Out by the Mothers of Invention in a department store music rack. I purchased it and was blown away. It can' t happen here, who are the brain police, I remember, doo doo, they had a swimming pool are all fresh in my mind 35 years later. Zappa kicked ass.

The Dayglo Abortions - Feed us a Fetus

Actually it is still a fun listen... NOT for the easily offended or terminally PC. Mid late eighties raunchy sloppy punk stuff with a little bit of a metal thing goin' on. Stand out tracks are 'Argh Fuck Kill' and 'Stupid Songs'

When I was growing up we used to have to travel 150 miles to buy records...Had no 'rock" radio...so a lot of my first purchases (LPs) were made because of the COVER!

Now you might say - man, that guy's an old #$%@*!

Well...me wishes tut
the name of the club was Love Street and the name of the band - ready for this "Sweet Smoke".

there were only about 20 folks in the club...Mitch Mitchell and the Chandler guy (manager) were there...
Hendrix and Mitchell got up on stage...they used the bass player...
Hendrix says "now I'm gonna do what I really like to do..."
he proceeded to play BLUES for about 45 minutes nonstop - turning a 335 upside down/sitting on the twin reverb he was playing through...heh

I bought Destroyer by KISS just because I thought it looked cool. I was only a young boy so I went in with my penny collection and poured it all out on the counter. The cashier was not too happy, but there I was with this big grin on my face.

About a month later my grandma took this record and threw it in the trash. She said it was "devil music". Needless to say I went right back out and bought it along with many more KISS records over the years.

ddavid...that Meet The Beatles record recently came up in conversation...Both my friend and I were in love with that cover too! Terrible dissapointment though...all interviews? We were laughing about this, cause as it turns out, we both had our mothers return the thing! Anybody else ever pull this kind of shit with vinyl? Today, that Meet The Beatles record is collectible...haven't seen a copy of it in a long time!

This one for the cover: Uriah Heep - Abominog.

I still have it on vinyl, as well as the one that I bought for the title: Ozzy Osbourne - Speak of the Devil.

Good tunes on both of them, coincidentally...

I bought the first album my "Mary's Danish", just because I thought it was a
great band name.

Liked the album, followed the band for a while.
Got rewarded big time by their third record, "American Standard". Killer album!

Best album title of all time IMO:

I bought a CD because it was in the electronic music section and the sheep on the cover looked funny. Listened to it and thought "wow they try REALLY hard to sound like aphex twin...".

Much later I stumbled over an article or post on the internet that said Richard James had made this CD under the name "The Tuss". I dug it out, listened to it again and thought "wow really nobody does it like him" heh

I saw this in a record shop and loved the cover but didn't buy it at first, several weeks went by. Everytime I went in the shop I saw it and I finally bought it. I'm glad I did because it's one of my favourite albums of all time.
