Here for the gear

MainStage 2 guitar tone

Hoping to hear some useful advice here that doesn't mean buying new gear.

I'm trying to use MainStage to get a usable pop/rock guitar tone. It's not working. It's not just how I'm listening; I've used everything from headphones up to a concert PA. I'm not looking for anything spectacular; I just want something generic. So far, everyone I've talked to has given me the overused "it's all in the player's fingers" or "you can't get good tone without vintage amps." My 30-watt solid-state practice amp sounds better than anything in MainStage. And I've heard some examples others have done; I can't get anything close to what they have.

What am I doing wrong? I'd really appreciate suggestions.

(I'm just looking for a very generic distorted pop guitar tone. Think American Idol.)
