Superlux BES5a; Interesting monitors

New monitors from Superlux. Around 250 euro for a pair. They look like older Genelecs or am I mistaken?

Butt ugly, that's for sure. They look like the Technics compact stereo system speakers I had as a teen.

But if I am not mistaken this housing is full aluminium so this will probably sound way way better. And with a great titanium tweeter I'd say a bargain for the hardworking musician.

Very little info but £125 a pair now. Might get some for home theatre! heh

No idea what they would be like as studio monitors but 30 days to try them out so not too much to risk. I bought a Superlux mic a few months back and it's good quality, well made.

Bump! They look really interesting, has anyone bought these? They look like Genelec 1029's imo. Might just get them to try them out, and return if they suck.

Edit: There's a B-Stock pair on thomann, so at least someone has tried them

I think i'd buy these as a pair for checking mixes but there's the possibility they sound terrible. Can't find anything about them, not a single review! Shipping back to germany would not be cheap so it's not really an impulse buy. I could treat them with Arc though so that's got me thinking, hmmm...

I own a lot of Superlux microphones and found them to be fantastic. Great this Genelec design is brought back to life and is now this affordable.

Yeah i have an ecm999 and it's a good little mic. I've read good things about their headphones as well. I may as well contact Thomann and ask what the shipping cost would be, i know some retailers have special rates.

IIRC return to Thomann within 30days is on their costs (it was anyway when I returned some mics).

How 'good' is 'good' in the ecm999 case? How's the noise, could it be usable in an AB set to record a live classical (choir) concert?

Seems odd combo with genelec looks lol. Do you mean they sound identical or are copied like behringer?

Haven't used it for much vocal work but i'd say it's good and clean, no noise. it's a good quality budget mic but for more critical use I don't know.

got them for 2 days.

- the cabinet is not aluminium but a rather non-resonant plastic
- one of the 2 portholes is fake
- the rubber pod listed as optional on the superlux website is in the parcel (a copy of the genelec one)

they are pretty well made

I've checked with some sinusoidal freq :
there is a strong noise coming from the portholes at some freq between 50Hz to 100Hz but it seems to be only present with the tests signals at loud level.

with music I've not heard the issue...

the sound seems to be good enough to prepare my mixes when I'm at home and there is plenty of bass for the size.

So fake port for looks then and not to deceive customers?

And they include the pods as standard?

Yeah they look like they pack some low end. The price has been tempting me for a while but return shipping would cost too much if i didn't like them. Do you think they'd be a good pair of secondaries for tracking and listening to music? Cheers.

I bought this monitors some months ago and I've sent them back. This is terrible piece of ****! Noise like waterfall. One of them was obviously broken because it made noise like 10 waterfalls. Another problem - the switch on the back side or better to say - the small slit in the switch works like whistle. Verly loud annoying sound on each loud signal (e.g. bassdrum).
But the bigest issue was the awful stench. Really intolerably. And not to forget port noise and strong air movement directly into the face.

Thanks for posting the pics. Same issues as Wasserwerk?

for 155€/pair I was ok with the sound but there is a strong vibration @50Hz and 80Hz on one speaker and, for the two of them, plenty of bass but plenty of port noise too under 100Hz...

for the air movement into the face, its a feature since I live in a warm place !

Sounds like terrrible QC! How can Thomann be selling monitors with issues like that?
