Hi Mark,
"I think I subbed a Tele 12AT7 instead of a 12AX7".
Could you say which of these two would be more suitable for the Solidtube? Or perhaps explain the difference if possible.

Thanks,
DW

The 12AT7 has less gain then a 12AX7. Doesn't matter what it's stuck in, guitar amp, mic, mic pre etc.

The Royer tube mod guts the electronics of a cheapo China mic and gives them handwired tube electronics. It was in Tape Op a few months, maybe even a year ago. This month there's a Royer tube mod for the small diaphragm mics which looks REALLY fukkin' cool.

Tom, I guess I'll have to stick more Velcro INSIDE the mic shell.

Anyone else think the ECM8000 is the RS PZM of the new millenium (in terms of it being a cheap mic that seems to be fairly well regarded)?

Nah, they're too damn noisy. I have two and I can't really use them for anything critical. They're fun to have around, but I reach for my Earthworks 99.9% of the time instead

Here for the gear

updated 22 aug 03 and oct 1

I'm new here, and a couple of years into learing about recording-- slowly adding gear as I can and see needs (and I see needs everywhere).

My mics are:
Blueberry, 2 Dragonflys, an SM 81, AKG C4000 (there might be a "B" at the end of that), AKG C3000 (no "B" at the end of that), 2 AKG C1000s which I don't hate as much as everyone tells me I should, a CAD M 39, an SM 57, and a Sennheiser 602. I've since added an MD 421II and an RE 20, a Beyer M88 and a Sure SM7B.

I'm hurting for pres as well: focusrite Green dual mono pre (Green 1 I think it is), dbx 386, dbx 376, older Joe Meek VC1, and (get ready to throw those rotten tomatos at me now .....) TWO (as in 2) ART dual MP's. Actually I don't hate those as much as I'm supposed to either. I've since added a UA 6176 and I think it is pretty sweet sounding.

I guess I've got a long way to go till I'm a "gear slut", maybe I'll take a short cut and do something indecent with a couple of shockmounts. Clearly my collection is the weakest here, but I'll be editing this post as I get more mics and pres. (Only when I see this thread on the front page).

My ADAM p-11's are pretty nice for my needs.

I'm starting to get a decent collection...

2 - Shure KSM44
2 - Earthworks TC30k
1 - Earthworks M30
1 - AKG C3000
2 - AKG Blueline
2 - Shure SM57
1 - Shure SM58
1 - AKG D112
2 - Crown PZM 30D
1 - AT 835
1 - MKE-2

The shotgun and MKE2 are for the occaisional odd location gig, or other special application type uses. I'm really diggin' the Earthworks and KSM44 pairs, and though the C3000 was my first condensor, I still haven't found a decent use for it. Everything goes through my Sytek pres and Ramsa convertors, or the Mackie 1202 if I really need it. I think it's a pretty flexible for a small locker.

Next up are a pairs of C42's and 441's, and eventually a decent ribbon, as well as (hopefully) 4 channels of Hardy M2 pres.

That depends on how many mics you use at any one time, doesn't it

For the time being I have no need to use more than two simultaneously.

Yes. Try it on the bottom side of a snare drum with plumbers copper insulation around the bell of it to get a more focused omni pattern... Huzah...

and: no, it doesn't sound good cramped into the hole on the side on the snare

well i had mine next to the hole on the side of the snare drum on a session yesterday, on its own it didn't sound great, but it gave me exactly what i needed when blended with the overheads. crack from the ecm8000, body from the atm33 & b1 o\hs. it wasn't "cramped" into the hole though, it was maybe 1 inch away.
