I've just dusted down my AKG D99 Harry head binaural mic.
It has the same texture a toy action man's hair. Gonna mod it with a handle bar tache and some piercings.

Only problem is I feel it watches me when I'm in the room alone....anyone seen the film mannequin?

Mine's all cheap but fun

SM58 (mostly for live vocals but sometimes I take the cap off and use it for snare)
Studio Projects B1
Sterling ST77 ($200 at MF just recently - awesome mic)
Pair of MXL603s for overheads and other stereo stuff
CAD KBM 412 kick mic
MXL R40 Ribbon mic

There's not much I can't record with this setup, and total price is under $1000.

The $$$$ mic lists posted in this low end thread are pretty ridonculous. Not that I wouldn't love to have them! Here's what I got, it's not a huge locker, but it's more than competent, and for what I do I think it will be enough for a few years:

1 Shure SM58
1 Shure SM57
1 Sennheiser MD441
1 Samson VR88 active ribbon, re-ribboned and slightly acoustically modified by me
2 Austin DIY Ribbon Mics with cinemag transformers (Named Julius and Augustus) - these have the asymmetrical ribbon motor thing going on that r-121s have (The Samson seems to as well), so there's a couple different sounds you can get out of them.
2 DIY Modded MXL v67s
1 Audio Technica AT4050 (kind of want another one of these at some point)
2 Sahiaman Little Blondies

I like all of this gear a fair amount. Blondies, 4050, and 441 do swiss army duty, and the ribbons and shures have enough mojo. The v67s are kind of in between, for captures that are not quite transparent, but are not obviously colored either.

Here for the gear

1.) Ev Re-20 -- got this used from a radio station for under $200. BEAST of a mic... sounds good on everything. KILLS on kick drum. try it. great on vox, bass cabs... i like to use it on the back of guitar amps when i'm using a 57 or a sennheiser on the front...

2.) shure sm57 -- you guys know the deal...

3.) shure beta sm58a -- i HATE regular sm58's... to me they sound muffled... i know i suck... but the beta 58a has a little more on the top, like pixie dust and it is humbucking too, so it sounds FAT and you can gain the hell out of it.

4.) MIG sennheiser e609 silverface -- just got this one, sounds awesome, looking forward to using it on a lot of stuff

5.) CAD GXL3000-- this is a multi-pattern condenser that i use as my utility mic. it does cardioid, omni and fig 8... plus it has low cut and a pad-- like a cheap neumann. I got this when they were giving them away in the back of MF catalogs for like $40... sounds great on guitars, voice, overheads, piano, percussion etc... and you don't have a heart attack when the drummer knocks it over : )

6.) golden age D2 -- this is a clone of a shure sm7. I got it cheap, it sounds awesome, although i have yet to use it on anything besides voice. Compares favorably to the shure for the price.

*** I'm really curious about the 421 though, everyone here loves 'em... gotta get my hands on one! Any love for the studio projects b3? this has caught my eye as well....

If anyone here is on a REALLY tight budget... the behringer xm8500 is a MILLION times better than an actually shure 58... I promise! I still love my 57, but that $20 mic... try it and it will make you a believer ; ) also, used beta 58a's can be found for cheaper than regular 58s... check the musicgoround site...

Okay. Who's askin' and why do you want to know?heh

I've been through a bunch of inexpensive mics trying to find what works for me. I am currently enamored of older dynamics from well respected manufacturers.
Although I am curious about other mics, particularly ribbons and high end dynamics, I am reasonably satisfied that I can get what I need from my current "collection".

I currently have---

Condensers:

1-Joly modded Oktava MK319
1-Joly modded MXL 603 w/omni caps
1-AT 3035
1-Shure SM81
1-Shure BG 4.0

Dynamics

1-Peavey 520i
1-Shure SM57
1-EV N/D 257b
1-Prodipe TT1
1-AKG 120e
1-AKG 190e
3- Sennheiser MD211U (love these)
1-radio shack no model#-used for talkback

Well, 2011 was hard on my gear. Had to do a sell off so I could put a downpayment on a new home, so a few of my fav. mics were sold, amongst other gear. (rip my 2 414-xls, tlm49, and r121, not to mention lunchbox/API/great river/Rosetta's/daking)

So, my meager stash is as follows...
Josephson c42 (x2)
AKG D112
Sm57 (x2)
MD421 (x2)
SM7B

Luckily, I have access to some neumann's and AKG's at a local studio, and my front end is still solid. Hope I can start rebuilding later this year

Besides, gear ain't nothing without good musicians and songs, right?

Mine cost me $2500 so far mostly used, covers the basic's.

1 Neumann tlm49 (Vox/room/kick/upright bass)
2 Neuman km184 (overheads/acoustics)
1 akg d112 (kick)
2 Heil pr28 (toms)
1 shure beta 57 (go to snare)
1 shure unidyne III sm57 (guitar/snare)

Next up I need a ribbon mic could be a pair of cascades.

I've got pretty much all of the usual entry level stuff:

SM57/58
At 3035
AKG C1000S
Apex 460
Apex 210
A couple of old bullet/lo-fi mics

That said, last night I removed the transformer from my SM57 and it sounds amazing (and I get to say I boiled a microphone on my kitchen stove). I also removed the extra shielding from my Apex 210 and it is very nice now too...

Shure PG56
Shure Beta 52a
AKG D5
Sennheiser E606

Ribbon:

Damn!

I thought this was supposed to be a low end thread. Now yall got me feeling depressed.

Surprisingly for as much love as the sm7b gets around here, I didn't see so many
in yall mic lockers?

Could it be......OVERATED!

I think so, no middle punch for me so I traded it in for for a at4047.

Ahhh....there's that low-mid punch I wanted to hear.

Also, not much u87's as I would of expected.

Here for the gear

1 apex drum mic kit. Includes a not very good kick, 3 acceptable gooseneck condensers as well ad a passable sdc and a snare mic I use live. I bought this before I knew anything about recording/live sound.

1 alcatron drum mic set. Was a gift and I can't say how I got it, just that it was a demo for a major manufacturer who already had a set of drum mics and passed on them. 4 small dynamics and 2 half decent (for the class) sdc's. The best part of this kit other than the sdc mics are the clips for close micing.

1 mxl r44 ribbon mic

1 apex 435 ldc. Like most cheap ldc's it has an unnatural high end but is useable.

1 apex 460

2 beheinger c2 sdc

2 sm57

1 audix d6

3 handheld vocal dynamics (1 akg, 1 apex and a wireless line6 for live sound)

1 shure beta87

This is the low-end section, right? Okay, then... I'll play.

1. Shure Prologue 16L. Cardoid "condeser" that runs of a single AA-battery.
2. Yoga DM-868. Cheap-ass dynamic. But it looks... Classic.
3. Sennheiser e906. My go-to for recording electric guitars.
4. MXL V67. What I use for acoustic and vocals.
