ev 635a 635d sound difference?

Hello there.

EV say "635N/D-B has the same... performance ... as the 635A(B) with the added benefit of increased output from its neodymium magnet structure."

But I was wondering if any of you wonders thought they sounded different.

Cheers.

You probably can't find two 635a's that sound the same, so the question's kinda moot.

Surely this is a j/k right?

The capsule in the 635/631/RE50 is so robust I don't know if I've seen another capsule that can be built over and over and over again and continue to perform consistently in both freq response sensitivity as well as polar pattern.

In a lot of 50 you may find 25 matched pairs, in all seriousness. We personally own several originals from the '60s of which the freq response lie right on top of response from current runs.

The 635n/db is an Neodymium magnet structure and is not in anyway similar to the 635 (aside from the 3/4" shaft. It is much hotter, and not nearly as linear in response as the original 635. I really don't care for the n/d version. Though it sounds great for broadcast, and I'm sure it can find a sweet spot somewhere in the studio. I also note they are not nearly as durable as the originals.

I love 635s... secret weapon for sure. Best dynamic omni pair with only a few exceptions....
