Power Amp fire

Power Amp fire

Pretty much...

I lent a cheap SPL-1000 eq series power amp off a friend, it was on for 5 hours (turned up at about half way, peaked around 5 to 6 times for a split second until i turned the bass down), and suddenly one of the main resistors on channel B caught fire...ANY idea how this could happen? Only reason i can think of is that it was a cheap amp with cheap components, which is probably the case!

it RRP's for around AUD$300 - AUD$480

Any help on what amp i could buy to replace it, which WOULDNT catch fire, would be better quality and around the same price would be a GREAT help

cheers

What kind of a load was it driving?

For a replacement, Crown has some pretty affordable amps.

+1 for Crown.
Just bought a used oldie for 150$ to power an extra monitor, and it's a tank!
If you can get a used crown from a reliable source, do it. The prices on their new gear is very reasonable too; xti 1000 at about $500. XLS 1000 is around $300 on sweetwater.

Make sure, as Tiny brought up, that the amp can deliver enough power into the load you put on it.
