Mixing with Izotope "Trash" plugin

I read an interview with Alan Meyerson where said of Izotope's Trash plugin: "The value of Trash for me has been the ability to subtly create differences in the amount of harmonic content. It enables me to make things speak much, much better in this complex world without using EQ. I find that EQ is very limited in how much you can affect things, whereas the generation of additional harmonics or sub-harmonics really does so much more with so much less. And that's where I tend to use it the most."

I'm familiar with the concept of harmonics but how would you use a distortion plugin to "create differences in the amount of harmonic content?"
Anybody?

To me it just sounds like synthetic tube drive harmonics. The plugin is pretty versatile and has a definite "sound" to it. I have used it myself on sends in Ableton Live to fatten up drums and guitars with similar results to tube preamps.

Of course its not perfect and requires tweaking - but at this point anything is possible given the tools and flexibility afforded by DAWs.

As far as using it in place of EQ, could you put the tube effect on a specific band rather than boosting the eq in the same frequency range?

Trash has multi-band settings, so you can select which frequency bands you want to effect (i.e. add harmonics to).

Love me some Trash...
