API/Neve into ADC... the missing link?

Hello -

Long time reader, first time poster.

I am looking into setting up a new portable 8 channel recording rig, mostly for overdubs. I am a big fan of the apogee rosetta 800 and will likely start there. I would next add some mic pre's from API, Neve, or some other top dogs.

My concern is the missing link between them. In this console-less design I would have no control of level besides the mic gain. But that's not enough is it? What if I want a low mic gain with a high output to maximize conversion quality? Or a crispy mic boost without clipping the converter? Should I just insert limiters on every channel? I know I could use a small console with FADERS, but I am looking for that elusive vapor-fader so I can stay in a 8 space or less rack case. Any thoughts?Thanks.....
