I have an old Shure 555w Elvis mix a friend gave me. I cleaned it up and added new foam. Any thoughts on it? No pro here and curious at what people use them for?

Can't get any more "Sun Records", than that mic. Elvis/Johnny Cash/Carl Perkins and Buddy Holly on his NY "Apartment Recordings".
Part of the early R&R/Rockabilly Canon. Surely a great Punk Rock mic too. Inspires "Attitude".

I almost never use the sm58, the AT2020 or the nt-5. I would love to have a few more of the m930, as that is a fantastic mic. Also, I would like
a Royer 121 and a pair of Beyer ribbons (is it called MC-160, perhaps).

Thx Chris! BTW there is a great book by Norbert Putnam on that era. Another about the Stax studio is by Don Nix. Sorry for the off topic....!

I’m a harmonica player and my friend was way into me playing thru it which is OK but I like to cup the mic and it’s like trying to cup a car radiator! Thinking might be good on a guitar cabinet or a vintage vocal? Weird ass cabling system!...

Where is that flipping Mussell Shoals documentary airing now? It's impossible to find on Flix or Prime.

The Muscle Shoals Doc was "free with ads", at YouTube, under "YouTube Movies"...
Very recently, when I saw it. I just checked and now it looks like "Buy or Rent" there.

Well, what's your most "cool" mic that you never use? And: What's the "uncoolest" mic that you use regularly?

For whatever reason I can't edit my old post, maybe 'cause it's almost 3 months old. Got a couple more iSK ICDMs on my birthday (total is 3 now, removed the foam from the grille). Also looking at getting a couple Line Audio CM4s, and two more iSK Pearls (I want one Pearl for every MK-012 I have, just because the sound is so similar, though the former is obviously brighter brighter, but hello EQ my old friend). Also looking at some Behringer B5s, the price is really inflated on Amazon.ca right now, I'm not paying almost twice what it's worth. It is a good mic, but it's still a sub $100 Behringer.

Good taste, for budget reasons I have the CAD M179s instead of any of the new C414s (the plan is to get some old B-ULS models for cheap and drop in a brass CK12 recreation when I can justify it). I love the M179 so much as a cheap utility mic, it is a bit more sibilant than my AT4050 sometimes (really just that hard ess sound, but it's not sparkly sounding like the Behringer B2 Pro), but the general tone is very similar.

What's your mic for interiors? The Countryman lavs? I would totally suggest the MK-012 film set, though mine just see occasional voiceover or VOIP. I wouldn't be surprised if the KSM141 worked too, I know it's cardioid/omni, but some reviews say it's really directional ("laser like", so I'm guessing they meant they found it like a supercardioid pattern).

I just came into a matched pair of Sterling Audio SL230MP’s at a very good price with a couple of new and much needed mic cables thrown in. Enjoying them so far, but haven’t really had the chance to work them as I have a project going that they aren’t ideal for. Cool Pete Thorne video on the site.

If the online manual is accurate (I have my doubts about frequency response specifically, I don't trust a really smooth looking one no matter who its from) it could be a very nice sounding mic. It's the self noise specs and sensitivity that keep me away from Sterling mics. I'm actually pretty interested in the ST159 and 169, but no frequency response means no buy (because for all I know it could sound like the MXL 2001). Plus it's more expensive than the CAD M179. If it's similar to the ST59 it could be a decent enough mic for the money.

Though I could be misinterpreting it and it could be the same as 13 dBA (like how the KM184 is 22 dB CCIR), though normally it's mentioned if the self noise is A-weighted or not. Looking at their older manuals, it might be 22 dBA. Of course that's not much worse than a lot of other more budget minded mics, and in an instrument mic I don't think it's too bad either.

I'll reach out to Sterling and post whether their self noise measurements are A-weighted or not and see if I can't get the averaged frequency response graphs for the large diaphragm models.

Pardon the lack of enthusiasm from the class- There's a whole lot of showing off junk in this thread, and the signal to noise ratio here is something else, even for the swamp!

And hey, I've got some junk mics too! I just don't brag about them like they're hidden gems. LOL forgive me.

Alright.. here goes! Now I don't want to disappoint, so no expectations of a Street-Walkin'-Slutz Mic Locker...

Not sure I have mics that fit your questions.. because my coolest mic is one that I like to use... An Apex 460 that I mod'ed a few years ago with a Cinemag tranny and NOS JAN 6072A G.E. Tube. I recently read though, that the most necessary and first mod that should be done is to change and reconfigure some caps and resistors that were incorrectly designed for the type of capsule that is used in the mic. I really want to do that based on what the real mod guys were saying in the thread.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAA!!!! Man, that was toxic even by swamp standards! But I know this was humor.

For all those who take the Nameless Unknown seriously: Remember I said I had some junk also! I'm guilty of parading around stuff as well.
A bit of comeuppance and deprecating humour/humor is always good!

I use that one live a lot. I even bought a second one after a mishap... Too bad you can't get the original with 3-position HPF. At least the model with the on/off switch doesn't have the ugly new rear ports.

Since 2010? Good gracious . . . I am truly a microphone slut, so of course.
I've added a U67, a Heiserman H47 tube, two Heiserman H47FETs, two Neumann U47FETs, an RE10 (pure junk), 3 Neumann KM84s, 3 Neumann U89s, an AEA R84, good grief . . . so many more, @ weave , unless I made a physical inventory, I'd forget so many.

EDIT: Beyerdynamic MC930 matched set . . . they're going to keep coming to me.
