I searched for a mic for bluegrass banjo that would not be harsh, as most LDCs were. I settled on the Peluso R14 ribbon. To my ears it reproduced closest to the actual sound of my banjo. I suggest you try some ribbon mics.

This is a great way to kick-start your mic locker, and you get a cool case, .... I think when you buy the package you save around 30 dollars off what you want,,,,,,ur mic locker is an old kitchen cabinet screwed to the wall with ... I hate about my locker is that it is hard

Not much. For a while I had a dozen or so lower end mics - MXL, Rode, Octava, etc....

In reality, they ended up sitting in the closet and never getting used.

I have the following - and they all get used at least a couple times a week:

Neumann U-87

Mojave MA-201 - this is my fav mic right now

Pair of Mojave MA-200 - these are great on acoustic guitars and as drum overheads

Shure SM-57 (I have 5 of these that I use on drums or on guitar amps)

Shure SM-58 - sometimes I bring this with me to gigs.

Not much of a collection but it works for me:

(2) Crown PZM
(2) Shure Beta
Sony ECM SDC
(2) MXL V67g
MXL 2003a
Rode NT1
ADK Hamburg
Cascade Fathead
Cascade Victor

Looking at that list I realize: I need more mics! Maybe a couple of U47s would do the trick.

I've always heard engineers say it doesn't matter what mic you use on a banjo, it's still going to sound like a banjo. :/

Mini Mic Cabinet

TLM 103 (yes, it works really, really well for me)
Shure SM57 (electric guitar cab)
Sterling ST55 (occasional vocal mic if things line up right)
BLUE Mouse (occasional vocal mic)
Cascade Vin-Jet (being delivered as I write this)
Shure SM58 (used in a live setting)

I run things either through a Golden Age Pre 73, a Univeral Audio M610, or straight into my Focusrite Saffire PRO if I want a little variety.

And yes, for some reason the Neumann TLM 103 works really, really well for my voice. I run it through the M610 most of the time and I'm happy with the results. That mic seems to get really polarized responses on here.
