How did you pick your studios name? Effects Pedals, Units & Accessories

studio naming

I sat around with several of my friends trying to name the studio. Every time someone suggested a name, we would try really hard to make fun of it. The goal was to come up with a name no one could make fun of - and OmniTone was it. Thus, "OmniTone Studios."

This is NOT an invitation to make fun of my studio name! heh

My studio was located in a residential area. The exit off the freeway was Exit #2, so I thought Exit 2 Studios sounded cool. Of course, I have since moved, so the name is even more ambiguous now.

Mine's sort of a two parter:

Up until about a year ago, I was seriously addicted to the online WW2 air combat sim Warbirds . I flew in a squadron named "Spectre" for about six years. My Icon is a heavily modified version of our squadron's logo.
Our squad leader, who was a member of the U.S. air force, also flew on the AC-130 Spectre gunships for real.

I thought "Spectre Sound" would be a nice way to pay tribute to a good friend who puts his ass on the line for a living.

The Stickhouse

Well, somewhere along the way I got the nickname "Stick"... actually, I think it started in 7th grade when a buddy would call me "Stick-in-the-mud" (my last name is Steckler). That stuck through high school, and then finally fit in college when I got tall, and stayed skinny.

Since one of the partners in my first company went to the same U as I did, Stick came along. Then, when launching out on my own a couple years ago my father-in-law suggested the name "Stickhouse". I liked it.

Now, one of these days soon there's going to be a real building to house the Stickhouse Studio.

On a side note, I use Stick and various permutations as an internet name... on a golf site I belong to I used Stickman, and was complimented on the "good screen name" in the context of golf... get it?! Golf clubs are often referred to as "sticks". I've played golf all my life and had never put that together!

There is an album, as important to music as anythign the Beatles ever did. By a band called NITRO. This album changes people's lives forever, without fail. The studio is named after this album too...

EVentually, people get around to asking what it means. It stands for "Out-F***ing-Rageous"...

A Priori Recording

I got mine from reading Jung books.
Also, one meaning for the latin phrase "a priori" means to have no formal training or education, similar to teaching one's self to play guitar.

I got my studio name from an incident in the Army. I was in signal, and being a tall and skinny guy, I was always sent to climb antenna masts and on top of our HumV mounted shelters. Anyways, during my first weeks at my real post, we had a huge barracks party. I was pretty well tanked and someone had the bright idea to throw our company's guide on (it's a flag) on top of our barracks. Knowing that hell would have to be payed if that thing was not recovered, a rather funny SSG looked over, saw me, and told me to get my "drunken monkey ass on top of that roof".

Well....we all found that comment pretty funny. After receiving the nick name "Drunken Monkey" I called my studio that. I even got the website. However, I have now shortened the name to DM Studios. I got sick of clients complaining when I charged them for time they made unusable by getting drunk instead of playing......

because, well, I live in a community called Painted Cave. Not that it's a studio by any means. The only person recording there is me. But I still write off all my expenses!!

The guy who owns Studio Lingo, where I do a lot of projects, is named Jack McDowell. Between that name and the fact that he's very tall and lanky, he named his band Stickfigure.

Hey Dave Darling- I believe I used your Danalectro bass over at Lingo a few months ago. Thanks!

Doorknocker Recording Studio

A silly 'pidgin' translation thing. The street I'm located at is called 'Dornacherstrasse', so my friend Mark from California suggested 'Doorknocker'. I added 'Recording Studio'....inventive,eh.....

--> bollich <-- sounds better than Bohlig, my real name. A friend began calling me bollich more than 15 years ago. Now even my boss calls me bollich.

I just added "music-factory" when I searched for an internet-domain. But I am the complete opponent to an assembly-line.

Granny Room Studios...

my grandma moved out the South Bronx to come live with us in the late 80's early 90's
and the room she stayed in, later became our hang out room, everyone called it grannie's room
so, when i put my studio in there, we called it Granny Room Studios
now, wherever i go, my studio will carry that name

rest in peace

I grew up in ILLINOIS and since I was a rapper and producer, it became ILLY-NOISE

Illynoise Music is now one of the most well known music talent pools in of all places, Colorado.

The official name of my studio is called SoundXcape Studios. I just thought that the bank would like that one more than ILLYNOISE.

Peace out,

Digital Lunarsea

I used to be a Psytrance live act called Lunarsea Weapon. We're a digital studio and i liked the lunarsea thing sooooooo......

Also because of the strange spelling its great having a reason not to give someone a job because they write to you they cant spell the company name correctly, I mean if you cant spell my company name by reading off an advert why should i let you near my equipment???!

cheers

My first studio was named quattroseiotto|recording (that means 468 recording) because I didn't like any name and someone suggested me to try out with numbers. It stucked for a few years. Than I shut down the studio and used it as a rehearsal room and black&white darkroom with a friend of mine. We went to a country fair and the morning after I woke up in my bed with a huge wood sign that reads "L'angolo del Porco" (Pork's corner) and for a few months I liked it a lot. Then when I decided to reopen the studio in its full glory I stumbled on a plastic sign from a gas station in a junkyard. DIESEL. White letters on black background. I had the logo, the name and the sign all at once and I think I'll live with it for a while.
BTW it's DIESEL. That's it. No recording, no studio. Nothing but DIESEL.

The first studio I co-owned was named "Night Train Studio" 'cause we thought that sounded really cool. Everybody who recorded got a free bottle of the fortified wine, too. http://www.bumwine.com/bumwine/nighttrain.jpg

Back in the day when I had time to record other people in my home studio(before I had kids), I used to do it for free for people that I liked... so I named it "Rubber Biscuit Studio" in honor of the Blues Brother's song. Anybody got huffy about the service/quality I'd just say "Wadayawantfornothin'?" If they stayed huffy, I showed 'em the door.

When my kids get big enough, I hope to start it up again.

My studio/ garage/ the only room I'm allowed to make a mess in, is called Perfect Hour Studios.
Perfect Hour is the street I live on. Using the plural "studios" is a bit of a stretch. I guess there is more than one room if you consider I sometimes track drums in the kitchen.
