I want to replace it with something that has similar inputs/outputs (4mono 4stereo inputs) and balanced outs. I would like to get something with better pre's on the mono in's and something a lot quieter than the 1202. I find if I turn up the main outs it outputs a very audible hf hiss. Any suggestions of a high quality small format mixer to replace it?
I think you need to look at your gain settings. Spec for the 1202 with all gains set to unity is -88dB of noise (referenced to a +4dBu signal). You can get quieter boards, but not by more than about another 8dB.
The pre-amps may contribute a bit more noise at high gain (from the specs it looks like they may put out -70dBu at max gain). The New Onyx mixers are about the same, except that they spec pre-amp noise at +60dB of gain at better than -125dB S/N.
The Soundcraft ghost is about the same.
The Soundcraft Compact 10 looks interesting, but the noise performance is a little worse.
Yamaha's MX12/4 is a little worse (and much worse if you use the sub-groups). The MG series is spec'd a bit weird, but probably about the same.
Behringer only specs mic pre-amp noise.
If you need better than -88dB with all channels nominal, you may have to go digital.
