Thumbs up manley

intresting thread this ... pro tools =levels then into anologue
desk seems like the way to go

personally im gonna get 2 of the manley 16-2 things

i can strap any eq i need over the inserts
and also i wont have to have a ''desk'' in front of me
which i find quite appealing for sum reason

+ what could sound better than the manley with various
amek neve pultek api eq's dotted about

gives me a couple of sends as well
so off to a plate and a couple of 1/4'' tape machines with me then ...
i use my own mic amps n such into the pro tools
and just come out thro the manley oooo yes please
might even have to sell me omniphonics and get a valve amp
for the speakers ... apparentley the attack is different so u make slightley diffent moves whilst mixing ..

funkey yuktyy yuktyy

suits me sir heh fuuck

I was thinking about getting a radar to use with my trident 70 for an analog style studio, but recently found out how much I like working in PT. So ill be trying to pick up a used mix or mix+ with 16 I/O's to use with my board/ outboard.

As for the no board studio..... I get way too many compliments on my refinished 7ft long trident. Plus the mic pres have been kicking my vintech 1272's ass for drums. I also dont want to confuse mixing a record with playing some game on the computer so ill stick with mixing hands on .... F plug ins!

Yeah I do like the vintage warmer.... but still prefer my fatso. Not saying plug ins arent usuable because i use them everyday. But in the perfect world I would always prefer the outboard equivilant which of course would run many times more the price. So you have to pick and choose. I use plug ins on background vocals, bass guitar, toms, and save the nice outboard for the real meat of song.

Planet Red,

I also use 16 I/O's from Pro Tools to the Trident Console (still I just have a 65, which is great though!). This has worked great for me. For smaller projects, where I don't need automation I mix per hand on the Trident and for Projects with lots of automation and 24+ tracks going on, I mix in Pro Tools but I buss pairs out to the TRident which still gives me the charm of using some of the Trident EQ, outboards etc. This is a very flexible system.

As for Plug Ins - I think there is some really good stuff out there. Ren Comp is a bomb on the Kik Drum. The Focusrite Plug ins are nice enough. McDSP is great. Loads of stuff I use daily.

VSL666, I swear we are like matter and anti-matter (not sure who is which)... I LOVE MCDSP!!! I actually prefer them over 1073's ALL the time... Ren on the kick? wow, I prefer the Digicompressor (much slept on) which is very DBX160XTish. Ren "Crunch" on rap vocals is a godsend. Ren Desser blows the 902 away hands down. The Spatializer (thank you vintage DSP card) is awesome on BG vocals. I also dig Magneato every now & again at 15 ips. I could go on and on...

Back to analog consoles: NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK NEOTEK

Buying a house gives me an excuse to buy one for a home studio...

E-cue,

the digicompressor on the kik? Really? I quit using it after I tried it a couple of times - think I'll give it another try- and always switched to Ren Comp, Focusrite (the plug ins equivalent to the RNC - transparent, reliable, never sucks) or McDSP. I use it on toms sometimes though when it is needed and DSP is almost full....

I really like the look of your place Markus. Your setup seems to be exactly what I'm going for.

As for plug ins ren comps are pretty cool most of the time but a little boring. The main plug in comp I end up using is the BF fairchild. Always does cool stuff to the music. Eq's on the other hand always suck (havent heard the sony's yet).

When my place is done itll consist of a mix or mix+ with 16 channels of decent I/O going into my trident 70, with a couple distressors, a fatso, an 1176 (anyone want to buy a pair of dbx 160vus?) and the kurzweil effect unit. Anything I else I'll need I'll use the plug in equivilant.

WHAT'S A NEOTEK?!?!?! *Spits out drink* *falls over in chair* *contempates suicide*

JK, Neotek is/was a company than makes console (Elan, Elite, Essence, Esprirt) and other audio gear that I cut my teeth on for a nice period of time and just have a special fondness for. The routing is a little funky, but I love the sound of it. I haven't meant a person that has worked on it and doesn't like it. Systek aquired the company, and still manifacters the Elite and the Elan. Damn, I'm getting a hard on.

Are you sure about Sytek acquiring Neotek? I thought Martinsound owned Neotek then killed the line. Sytek is run by Mike Stoica, who was a principle of Neotek, and they have their own console designs that are no doubt related. I didn't think they had revived the Neotek line, though.

Nah - they're all over the place. What's hard is finding a real country band in Nashville...

Yeah, steer clear of the B series Trident... Worked on one and hated it. I was extremely disappointed.madd Eq's sounded "consumer" to me & my producer, Mic pres were scratchy as hell, very 'skinny' sounding. I don't know if the board was mantained well, but each channel sounded different. I found myself cross patching all the tracks so the more important ones could get the "good" channels.

Sytek did aquire neotek from martinsound. Search RAP about it, there was a big post about it about a month ago. Dont know what that will do to the sytek consoles.....

Howdy Alpha,

We've discussed this before, but we're really digging the 80B that replaced our Pro Control. Instant improvement in both tracking and mixing. I'm still kind of setting up a working template on the console, but the difference is night and day. Mixes come together MUCH quicker. No f*ck*ng delay issues, inserting all kinds of goodies on drums (1176/CL1B/LA2A/etc.), AND (don't recall if I mentioned it or not when we spoke) the Lex and TCs sound MUCH better run through the Trident's aux (as opposed to digi I/O in PT)...

Very Pleased. But, it is a PIA to install, rewire, and commission... After about 6 months, we're finally 100%. When we take vacation later this month, we're having the power supply, master and auxs rebuilt. We've elected NOT to do the upgrades on the input channels (a Trident should sound like a Trident!).

Recall is fairly painless (faders at unity, basic eq/outboard/fx documented) and automation is over in PT land.

If only I could figure out how to get the Trident into Vegas Mode!

p.s. Do give me a ring, we'd still love to come up and listen to your ADAMS...

Sincerely,

oh **** man... i totally forgot to give you a call back. i got pounded the rest of that week and still overloaded. i will give you a call soon when i get a minute.

well, i think i might just go for this mackie control for DP. i REALLY like mixing in DP and it seems to be the most well integrated controller for it. its got 10bit faders touch sensitive too. i just need a CR section.... so now thats what im looking for.

i mean for the price [and assuming they have extension fader packs on the way] i could get 32 channels of faders for $4k. definately a hold over until all this technology sorts itself out. i think if/when i need a big board... ill just go to a studio with an API instead for now.

The Daking consoles are looking sweeter everyday for me. They aren't cheap, but they are in about the same range as the ATI mentioned above. I am pretty sure it's max 24 faders, but what it lacks in channels makes up for in Geoff's EQ on every channel. I could get by easily on submixes into 24 channels from a DAW....

Resurrecting!

Bumpity bump bump!!!

Resurecting this OLD thread - don't want to start a new one. Looking for a board in the same $$ range. Heard/read good things about both the Trident 80B and the Neotek Elite. Also heard/read that it is tough to get a good used one without spending a lot getting it back to good health (plus, for the Trident at least, parts are becoming a serious problem!!). Any ideas/opinions/feedback?

I have an Audient ASP8024 analogue console

I have had my new Audient ASP8024-24 channel console desk now for one year. It sounds great and I haven't had any problems at all.

I have a day job, so my music studio is a home "project" studio, where I work several evenings a week when time allows. I have the Audient console in operation for usually up to 10-hour sessions at a time.

I am a keyboard player/writer: I currently plug 3 K2600 Kurzweil synths into the Audient console, which gives me 24 channels or 12 stereo channels of audio. I also have 3 other older syth modules (Roland, Yamaha, and Proteus) plugged into the Audient as well. I plan to add/upgrade with a new Mac Pro and pluggins in the future to add 16 more channels of synth audio.

During my first year with this Audient console, I have been learning to record at a higher level than I ever have along with learning my new outboard gear: I have all 4 main Auxes with reverb units and a DBX equalizer.

The Audient Asp 8024, for me, is a great console that has a great noise/signal ration (I have run 30 channels at full throttle) in mixes thru an Apogee 200 Rosetta into an M-audio Delta 192 card on a Sweetwater Creation Station computer with Waves “Z-noise” and there is hardly any noise (hum or hiss) that I have to reduce. If there is, I have to crank the mains volume up 100% to really hear any unwanted noise.

(NOTE: One thing I did was to place my studio on a dedicated sub panel where each kind of equipment is plugged: I have 3 15-amp and 1-20 amp circuit on this panel. Hence, the Audient desk has its own 20-amp circuit -- and I plug the Audient into a Furman 20 amp line conditioner that is plugged into a 20-amp Furman voltage regulator. I was told this would help protect and ensure the Audient electrical power. I have isolated the Audient power supply in a nearby utility closet and place a small fan in the closet to pull air out. I am lucky I can not hear the fan or Audient power supply and low Furman box’s hum.)

Before I bought the Audient I had a Tascam M-3500 for 15 years. I gave it to a friend of mine, who also is doing home recording with his son’s rock band. The Tascam was noisy, develop scratchy pots, phantom power went out on 4 channels, effects returns quit working, one channel strip went out the first year I had the console… However, this Tascam console was tank! Literally build to last the war. I paid $6,000.00 for it brand new; it was a good console, but my new Audient ASP8024 is a huge step up for performance, sound quality, construction etc.

You can hear pros and cons on all consoles, probably even the expensive ones such as SSL and Neve etc. I have read as many forums and reviews as the internet has one most consoles.

So, one year later, I am happy to have purchased the Audient console. For the kind of music I am doing and all of the fancy gear I am plugging into this new Audient console, it is yielding a quality sound. There is only one person using the console (me), so the wear and tear of multiple engineers won’t be an issue. But, with all the hype about Summing boxes now and DAW mixing, I prefer using the analogue console to get away from computer screens and glare. The magic is sitting in front of a good audio console with just speakers, not computers.

My new Audient console ( and I live in the Midwest of America) will probably be my last console, unless of course, I make millions with one of my compositions...
