Art pro vla compressor question

I have a Tl-audio Ivory tube preamp/compressor, and like the sound (probably the only one here on this forum... )... but it's really hard to see how much it does... it either does not compresses, or a lot, say 12 db... there is not much inbetween. So I have made mistakes while using it for tracking.

My RNC I can set so it pushes down about -2 or -4db... that is nice and easy. But the RNC misses the tube sound.

Is The Art Pro VLA more accurate than the tl-audio ivory? And also does it sound better? (I like it warm and raw... 60ies sound.)

The VLA is really pretty transparent. I think it's a great piece of gear for the price, but it doesn't color the sound much.

I use it for a 2 buss comp when summing OTB. It is quite transparent if a bit difficult to push with the stock tubes.

The guy who owns the company was in my venue, the other day, and looked at the ART gear in my rack and said; "That's my company."

I told him I was going to replace the tubes and he asked what with and said "NOS Mullard, if I can find some."

He told me to e-mail him as they have some cool stuff coming up including a new PRO VLA that has adjustable plate voltage / bias, and he could turn me on to a deal on the stuff that's coming out of R&D, next year. Can't wait to check it out.
