headphone amp volume

headphone amp volume

what would you say is the top volume you should put up a headphone amp before it starts sounding strained? I don't have a dedicated headphone amp, just the one on my ULN-2 - my current thinking is about 12 o'clock, above that I feel as if I'm hearing harshness that isn't actually in the recording
