mic pre to go along with mbox 2?

What would be a good mic pre to compliment the mbox 2? budget under 1400.

unless you have a good converter i would suggest

the api a2d 2 pres plus execelent conveter. i paired one with
my mbox2 and made a world of difference , but its about 1700..

i agree
you might want to bypass the converters in the mbox using the s/pdif inputs

to name a few:

A2D2 (a bit above your budget, but might be worth it for api),
Apogee Mini-Me (about half your budget used),
M-Audio Tampa (less...not sure how much, and only one channel with compressor)

if you scored a mini-me and another two channel pre (DAV BG-1, Chameleon Labs, etc.) you could have four simultaneous inputs...
i'm pretty sure you can do that with the mbox 2s.

bottom line is if you saved up a bit more loot you could pickup some really nice gear.

good luck

What about just getting a new interface like the fireface 800? Will the pre's on that be fine? Guitar Center labor day sale tomorrow, gotta score something big!

i almost did write on my previous post that why won't you just go and buy FF400/800?

I don't know how many tracks you need to record, but I would go for the FF400 PLUS the DAV BG1. I think you can probably score both for that 1400. And you can always more channels later on (ADI-2, ADI-8... maybe even a QuadMic D).

FF800 ain't a bad option either.

get a high end two channel if you're not doing a lot of multi channel recording. a 2 channel API or 2 channel Neve/vintech 1272 would be good.

I would rather have 2 channels of really good preamps than 8 channels of prosumer preamps.

i almost forgot. you can get two of these. Summit audio mic pres.
