Your pick for "desert island mic" under 1 grand

I'm really sorry if this has been beaten to death before--I did do a search first but I'm new here.

Let's say you've got a small project studio that does everything from hip hop to rock to traditional irish music. Here's what's already in the mic locker:

SM57's
Oktava MC012's
AKG D112
Rode NTK
CAD M179
Oktava MK319
Shure VP88

Preamps are Mackie Onyx and FMR Audio RNP.

You've got about $800-1000 to spend on a mic that will do well with a wide variety of vocalists, acoustic instruments, and a variety of guitar amp mic'ing scenarios.

What's your next purchase?

KSM44? Sputnik? 414? Something else?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and insights.

Thanks Tom.

Is the 4050 essentially the same mic (or sound) plus patterns?

it isn't. 4047 is darker sounding.

Have you heard the listening sessions files? The Listening Sessions - Session 5

there's also some nice shootouts at Microphone Clips and Audio Samples at ***************.com

and you could also go to AT's homepage for some nice samples.

This is all just to get a rough idea of their sounds. Of course everything sounds different in every engineers hand.

IMO the 40line is a huge

I agree with the 4047, it's pretty killer on everything. For $1000 I would get the 4047 and a ribbon mic or two for contraast (Fathead II which I love)

+1 (2?) For vocalists, acoustic instruments, and guitar cabs, it is pretty damn solid. It adds a nice colour that seems to go with most anything (or everything), and in that way is preferable, at least to me, to the 4050. It rules on acoustic guitar and many vocalists.

mojave ma200, everything sounds great that i put in front of it. The only problem is where would you plug in the power supply on a desert island?

Into the coconuts.......

They have about 1/2 volt per nut. Plus they have built in AVR, up to 4000 jouilles!

Nick, I was just wondering how's RNP compared to Onyx?

Assuming your desert island has power ... a CAD VX2.

Should be able to find a good used one for between 750 - 950.

probably one of those earthworks mics, and hope that I can use it to spear fish or something.

There are a lot of answers that could fit in here but I would say an AT 4060 would be a great choice. For $1k you could get an Beyer M160 and RE20 or SM7 if you shop carefully.

You already have a pretty good variety (you can use SDC for vocals...).

I would get something brighter and something darker than that M179.

Say, a SP B3 on the bright side - and a SM7 or RE 20 on the darker side.

Of course, the Heil PR30 is another mic thats well worth having too. I have only used mine on instruments so far, but there's no reason it wouldn't work as a vocal mic.

To my ears the RNP is a little "bigger" sounding with maybe just a bit more midrange info, but honestly I never did a blind A/B. The mackie seems very neutral to me, but the RNP isn't really heavily colored. One of these days I'll do a proper comparison.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

As long as there weren't high winds on that island, hellz yes!

I love the R84, the quintessential ribbon mic in my opinion.

If I were on a desert island, the only mic I would want is a bullhorn to see if anyone could hear me.

You and I both know you'd be sending that thing off for a boutique mod before you even got around to trying to call for help.

Tough call.
Maybe a Senn MD441.
Sounds like a condenser, works on everything, takes SPL and abuse as a dynamic and as a stick you could hit someone/something with it.

I haven't found anything that the AT4060 doesn't at least do 'ok', and it does most things pretty great. They retail for over a grand, but you can pick them up for far less if you keep your eyes open. I got mine for $500.
