Sound Devices MixPre / -D for music recording?

Has anyone ever tried using the Sound Devices MixPre/-D for recording music/vocals.

These are usually used in Film Recording and supposed to be very clean and I thought they might be good to record Synths and give the level a boost without changing the tone.

Any advice if this is better than using standard Audio Interface preamps?

The Mixpre can be used, but as far as it being better than "standard Audio Interface preamps" will depend on these 2 major factors:
1.) What interface you are comparing it to
2.) Your personnel preferences to how you want it to sound.

The MixPre-D has been discontinued by Sound Devices, but you can probably find used ones for a good price. The USBPre2 is still available and is an excellent interface with very good clean preamps; works on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
